At the approximate eye level of a three-year-old child, familiar streets can reveal a very different reality. A kerb may become a barrier, a crossing may feel dangerous, and the absence of shade, greenery, seating, play or safe space to move can determine whether a street supports daily life or excludes people from it.
The Street Design Challenge 2026 is a 48-hour international competition inviting university students from UNESCO Creative Cities to reimagine real streets as safer, more playful and more caring environments for young children, caregivers and local communities.
Now in its sixth edition, the Challenge is organised by the Cities of Design of Detroit, Muharraq, Doha, Wuhan, Asahikawa and Querétaro Creativo. Participating teams will work on a Street Profile from a Creative City in another country and propose feasible, low-carbon interventions responding to local needs while fostering intercultural dialogue.Universities based in any UNESCO Creative City may register up to three multidisciplinary student teams. UNESCO Creative Cities may also participate by submitting one Street Profile in English, focusing on a real street segment of up to 300 metres.
