To mark its 50th anniversary, the \u00c9cole de design of the Universit\u00e9 du Qu\u00e9bec \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al (UQAM) is issuing a call for papers for the colloquium <\/span>MUTATIONS : <\/b>O\u00f9 va le design ?<\/i><\/b> (<\/b>MUTATIONS: Where is Design Heading?)<\/i><\/b>,<\/span><\/i> to be held in Montreal from September 18 to 20, 2024. The aim of this event is to explore how design<\/span> is responding to present day <\/span>environmental, social, and technological mutations, which innovative practices are being adopted, and what issues are at stake.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As socially and morally responsible designers, we must respond to the needs of a world that is up against the wall. The clock of humanity is always striking thirteen.<\/span><\/p>\n

Victor Papanek,\u00a0<\/span>Design for the Real World, 1971<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In his manifesto <\/span>Design for a Real World<\/span><\/i> published some fifty years ago <\/span>\u2014<\/b> just as the \u00c9cole de design of UQAM was opening its doors <\/span>\u2014<\/b> Victor Papanek was already stressing\u00a0 the importance of integrating social and environmental concerns into the design process. Since then, as design evolved beyond its traditional role of primarily producing physical objects, it has emerged as a powerful force that influences our social interactions, cultural and economic systems, as well as our environment.<\/span> But our times, faced with monumental challenges <\/span>\u2014<\/b> escalating disparities, erosion of social cohesion, cultural polarization,\u00a0 ongoing crisis of displaced populations, intensifying climate emergency<\/span> \u2014<\/b> are once again prompting us to question the role of design, at a time when the technological acceleration affecting all spheres of human activity is raising the very question of the discipline\u2019s future. The colloquium <\/span>MUTATIONS : <\/b>O\u00f9 va le design ?<\/i><\/b> offers an opportunity for collective reflection on these issues, to help shape a more stable and equitable future.<\/span><\/p>\n
