SUMMARY:#cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL 2022 in Cape Town focusses on water-sensitive design
DESCRIPTION:The #cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL 2022 in Cape Town\, brought into sharp focus the life-sustaining significance of water and the valuable role it has in shaping healthy\, equitable and sustainable blue-green cities for all African citizens. \n\n\n Drawing on four monthly Creative Exchange events held from April – September in the city\, under the theme – Designing African blue-green cities for all – the Design Festival focused on how we design better processes\, systems and products that can lead to a more water secure future\, particularly in an African context. \n\n\nOn Day 1\, the festival focused on water and Day 2\, explored what it means to keep citizens at the centre. The event featured a variety of experts across a range of disciplines\, to share knowledge\, and ask provocative questions to create a broader community of diverse skills and perspectives\, breaking down silos\, and inspiring collaborative action to inspire water-sensitive design. \n\n\nAn initiative of the Mission Network of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in South Africa\, the annual festival celebrates and examines the power of design to tackle current socio-economic and environmental challenges within an African context. \n\n\n The festival was organised in collaboration with the Craft and Design Institute (CDI)\, and in 2022 the Creative Exchanges and festival have been curated in partnership with / curated with the support of the University of Cape Town’s Future Water Institute\, the City of Cape Town and the Institute for Landscape Architecture in South Africa.  \n\n\nWith the broad theme: “Designing African blue-green cities for all”\, and through the lens of water sensitive design the #cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL 2022 invited subject experts to talk on a range of topics under the key pillars: \nWater in focus: Our future is undeniably impacted by climate change caused by humans\, along with the complex challenges of rapid urban growth that threaten water supplies. There is a great urgency to focus on the critical state of water. In this context\, how do we build in balance with nature? What are the challenges and how effective are the existing solutions and innovations? \n Citizens in focus: Urbanisation brings both challenges and opportunities. Is it possible to design solutions for cities that are good for the natural environment and also good for the health and wellbeing of citizens? How impactful is public engagement and citizens’ voices. When citizens have conflicting needs\, how do we find common ground? Using green and blue design solutions\, we can build healthy cities and explore effective ways to promote health and well-being. \n This year the festival culminated in the #cocreate Blue-Green Cities Design Awards to acknowledge people who have played a significant role in the water sector. The awards ceremony celebrated those who have uplifted communities and who strive to develop sustainable innovations and inclusive systems within our cities and recognised projects that promote water sensitive design\, the development of resilient cities\, and that showcase the value of building in harmony with nature for all citizens. \nThe project is aligned to UN Sustainable Development Goals 6 (Clean water and sanitation) and 11 (Sustainable cities and communities). \n \n\nF U R T H E R   I N F O R M A T I O N \nWatch the #cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL 2022 on YouTube here: \nDay 1 – Water in focus: https://youtu.be/hedGvh3FbbU \nDay 2 – Citizens in focus: https://youtu.be/Fnl_kXemdlg \nC O N T A C T \nEmail: info@thecdi.org.za\n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:WONDER - Kortrijk Creativity Festival
DESCRIPTION:From 20 October to 6 November\, the third edition of the free creative city festival WONDER will take place in the centre of Kortrijk. The many creative\, cultural and socio-economic organisations and educational institutions of Kortrijk will present a varied programme around the theme Let’s get phygital\, with the Budafabriek as its main venue. \nLet’s get phygital\n\nThe future is now. A new generation is ready to sink its teeth into the social challenges of tomorrow in its own atypical and rebellious way. They are not afraid of experimentation\, but enthusiastically embrace the latest digital technologies without denying their classics. They go phygital … WONDER inspires with how the next generation thinks about the sustainable future of the world\, city and region. \nThe theme Let’s get phygital (a contraction of ‘physical’ and ‘digital’) was aptly designed in the campaign image by the West Flemish illustrator Jonas Devacht. Jonas is an alumnus of the Devine programme at Howest and held the K-TOTEM at Kortrijk Station in 2021. \nPartners and programme\n\nParticipating organisations this year are Designregio Kortrijk\, Howest with the courses Industrial Product Design\, Digital Design and Development and Digital Arts and Entertainment\, Intercommunale Leiedal\, Texture\, Bib Kortrijk\, arts centre BUDA and Voka West-Vlaanderen. They are building a programme consisting of exhibitions\, installations and activities with a focus on the next generation. How do young designers and companies respond to social challenges such as digitisation and sustainability? WONDER wants to surprise its visitors\, have them dare to look at what is and wonder about what is to come. \n“During WONDER\, all the creative talent in Kortrijk can once again show itself to the general public. After a successful edition last year at the Site Van Marcke\, WONDER returns to the centre of the city and the visit is again completely free.” Ruth Vandenberghe\, mayor \nThe Budafabriek will be the beating heart. But also many external parties will participate with installations\, expositions and activities spread throughout the city centre. WONDER will therefore once again be a celebration of creativity for young and old. \nWONDER will be free to visit. The detailed programme will be announced in mid-September. \nOrganisations\, companies or people interested in participating can contact Designregio Kortrijk: info@designregio-kortrijk.be \n\nC O N T A C T \ninfo@designregio-kortrijk.be \nF U R T H E R  I N F O R M A T I O N \nWonderkortrijk.be

SUMMARY:Design Month Graz // Design Everyday
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition DESIGN EVERYDAY shows outstandingly designed everyday objects from the Austrian design scene.\n  \nInitiated and curated by Vandasye \nAs a creative service\, product design is more than mere shaping. The development and design of objects for everyday use shapes our relationship with our environment and thus our culture of life. \nDesign is something everyday\, both in terms of its use and its availability. It influences the relationship of the individual to his surroundings and environment. Useful\, responsibly designed and sustainably produced everyday objects are therefore becoming all the more important as the boundaries between the real and virtual worlds become increasingly blurred. \nWhile it is becoming increasingly difficult to identify those qualities that lend validity to good design in an unmanageable world of goods\, the Design Everyday format provides insights into the regular activities of Austrian design studios. \nThe selection focuses on furniture and products of everyday life that contribute to the further development of contemporary design in Austria and beyond. \nIn its entirety\, the format represents an open\, growing collection: without any claim to completeness but with the perspective of offering Austrian product designers a platform with international reach in the future. The aim of the initiative is to stimulate discourse and cooperation between design creators\, theorists and manufacturers in order to strengthen mutual exchange and promote joint collaborations. \nDesign Everyday is an ongoing project curated by Vandasye\, which has been shown annually since 2017 as part of Vienna Design Week and is accompanied and supported by the latter. \n

SUMMARY:Design Month Graz // ZweckZwei – Shift Circular Design
DESCRIPTION:From residual material to raw material. As part of the ZweckZwei-DesignCamp in spring 2022\, eleven designers worked on giving industrial residual materials a second life in the sense of circular design. The exhibition shows the transformation process that took place and the resulting prototypes developed by the designers.\nThe production of consumer goods constantly produces residual materials. Many companies have neither the ideas nor the means to process these recyclable materials in a meaningful way. As a result\, vast amounts of resources are wasted every day. In order to counteract this and to transform residual materials into raw materials\, the ZweckZwei-principle was brought to life. ZweckZwei rethinks the circular economy and transforms recurring residual materials from trade and industry into marketable products. These are manufactured by socio-economic enterprises in the region. More than 20 local industrial companies already supply their industrial residues to ZweckZwei\, including Niceshops\, A&R-Karton\, BT Watzke\, Wollsdorf Leder\, Ringana\, Vossen and Zotter. The goal is to intercept residual materials from industry before they are disposed of or undergo a costly recycling process. Awning remnants\, twist locks\, welding wire spools\, aluminum reflectors and cardboard tubes can thus become starting material for new products – with minimal use of additional resources. \n  \n“For industrial companies\, waste and scrap materials are just trash\, but for us they are treasure – and source material for marketable products with minimal climate impact”\, says Karl Steinwender\, initiator of ZweckZwei. \n  \nIn spring 2022\, the ZweckZwei-DesignCamp was organized by ZweckZwei\, Creative Industries Styria and the SelfSightSeeing Company. The goal was to develop prototypes for sustainable and high-quality products. Eleven designers – including the curators Io Tondolo and Itshe Petz (SelfSightSeeing Company) – from different fields worked together on new products for one weekend. After the experts from fields such as industrial design\, fashion design and interior design were introduced to the materials and technical possibilities\, they moved on to brainstorming and prototyping. \n  \n“This camp was just the beginning! It allows us to show what is possible in this field – first and foremost\, the development of high-quality products from residual materials that are not in the classic eco-niche”\, emphasize Itshe Petz and Io Tondolo. \n  \nThe exhibition shows the transformation process “From Trash to Treasure” – in the spirit of the circular economy\, the New European Bauhaus and a Green Transition – and the resulting prototypes – from acoustic panels to drawer handles and design elements to sun hats and lamps.

SUMMARY:Design Month Graz 2022
DESCRIPTION:Design Month Graz gives insights into various creative disciplines and points of contact to the most diverse designers. Events such as exhibitions\, workshops or lectures invite you to network in the UNESCO City of Design Graz. \nDesign Month Graz bundles and condenses the energy of the local creative industries within one month\, makes it visible to the outside world and thus makes a central contribution to anchoring the creative industries in people’s consciousness. It provides a space for innovative projects – be it experimental or commercial – and thus heightens the perception of the meaning of design: it is not about purely decorative behaviors (design as styling)\, but about the economic relevance (design as development and value added process) as well as the transformational power of design in economy and society. \nNumerous local partners are also involved in Design Month Graz. The term “design month” acts as an umbrella brand and assembles the individual activities under one uniform appearance\, without jeopardizing their independence. The Creative Industries Styria coordinates and organises the Design Month Graz and spans a substantive and programmatic range from a variety of individual initiatives from designers to the large local design training institutions\, thereby enabling synergies and cooperation between the creative industries and “classic” companies. \nFrom May 7th to June 12th 2022\, a dense and diverse program will be presented in the Austrian UNESCO City of Design. Exhibitions\, lectures\, workshops\, presentations and guided tours bring the value and meaning of design to the public. It puts the city in a state of exception in which design can be perceived everywhere. \nDesign Month Graz 2022 focuses its program on the topic Green Transition. \n  \nFURTHER INFORMATION \nwww.designmonat.at \n

SUMMARY:Design Month Graz // The Chairman
DESCRIPTION:In the exhibition “The Chairman” at the designforum Steiermark\, the designer and architect Martin Mostböck shows how he approaches the challenge of an armchair design\, which is considered the supreme discipline in design.\nThe architect and designer Martin Mostböck designs furniture\, houses\, interiors\, everyday objects and is a border crosser between disciplines. In the exhibition “The Chairman” at the designforum Steiermark\, Mostböck shows designs that were created in the last two decades. On display are armchairs and furniture that stand in the field of tension between art and serial product. Among other things\, excellent museum pieces will be presented. But small series and serial products of individual pieces can also be studied in the show. In this way\, it is possible to trace the wide world between experiment\, craft\, industry and sustainable design. The exhibition shows how connections between different areas are entangled and flow into the design process. Mostböck thereby attempts to make these invisible connections visible. \nIn the case of his well-known Flaxx Chair\, which is published by Moroso\, the initial idea was simply to design a four-legged cantilever chair. A Ducati racing bike inspired Mostböck to connect the chair’s legs. He copied the welded-together legs of the furniture from the rear swing arm of this motorcycle and transformed them into his functional and formal language. Again and again\, he also emphasizes the importance of the personal relationship with the producers of his pieces\, from the craftsman to the executive. Mostböck also emphasizes the regional and sustainable aspect of his work. So the chair produced by Braun Lockenhaus\, extremely elegant and with nimble details\, which Mostböck designed for the restaurant of top chef Konstantin Filippou\, is not to be missed. \n \n\nF U R T H E R   I N F O R M A T I O N \nclick here

SUMMARY:Design Month Graz // Around Autofiction
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition shows a snapshot of the activities and initiatives of UNESCO Cities of Design around the future topic of mobility.\nDetroit\, Geelong\, Graz\, Kortrijk\, Puebla\, Saint-Étienne and Turin are all members of the UNESCO Creative Cities of Design Network and at the same time big names in the automotive industry. Now these cities have come together to share their experiences and visions of the mobility of the future. While individuals’ desire for mobility continues to grow (the number of cars worldwide passed the 1.2 billion mark in 2020)\, profound efforts to change our consumption patterns\, our use of resources\, and our political and social positions can be found everywhere. \nAround Autofiction is a traveling exhibition enriched by workshops with partner cities\, providing an overview of a wide variety of mobility projects being implemented in UNESCO Creative Cities of Design. It shows a snapshot of the respective activities and initiatives and always focuses on innovative concepts to be rethought in the field of tension between social\, ecological and economic issues. \nThese inspiring projects paint a portrait of research by designers and companies in the UNESCO Creative Cities of Design and underscore the cross-cutting nature of the questions surrounding the mobility of the future and all that is at stake. The range presented follows the pace of a changing industry and reveals the global nature of the mobility issue. Mobility is a social\, political and environmental problem that also affects regions and communities and their specificities. This panorama of mobility is accompanied by objects and videos that support the work of designers\, companies\, researchers\, students and users on the mobility of the future. \n

SUMMARY:Grand Opening
DESCRIPTION:From May 7 to June 12\, 2022\, the UNESCO City of Design Graz is once again hosting the Design Month Graz. This annual design festival highlights a wide range of design disciplines with a dense and multi-facetted event program. For a whole month\, the city will set the stage for exhibitions\, workshops\, meetings\, presentations and a multitude of individual initiatives by designers\, local design training institutions and universities as well as business enterprises. \nThe focus of the program is on “Green Transition\,” a Europe-wide transformation process in which the creative sector plays a key role. Thanks to the sector’s claim to innovation\, it is able to support and fill the European growth and development strategy “Green Deal” with specific content. This requires a joint effort from everyone – quite in the spirit of the interdisciplinary initiative “New European Bauhaus\,” which seeks sustainable solutions and accompanying strategies to manage the transformation. The program focus on “Green Transition” offers a platform for contributions and solutions from the creative sector\, also addressing the transformation and revolutionary processes that will lead towards a sustainable future. In that context\, the role of design is also undergoing change: the individual will take a back seat in favor of the community\, and “Society Centered Design” will increasingly replace “Human Centered Design.” \nOrganized and coordinated by the Creative Industries Styria network\, the Design Month Graz offers a platform for socializing and making oneself visible\, while also emphasizing the importance of design for everyday life and the economic relevance of creative processes as a key to mastering future challenges. \n \n\nDesign Month Graz has some long-standing media partners\, from online and print magazines in Austria and Portugal to Italy and the UK. Here is an overview and brief information about the individual blogs\, radios and publications. \nF u r t h e r   I n f o r m a t i o n : \nc l i c k   h e r e

SUMMARY:Human Cities‐SMOTIES
DESCRIPTION:Human Cities‐SMOTIES : creative works with small and remote places is a four-year European project (2020 – 2024) supported by the European Commission under the Creative Europe programme. \nHuman Cities is a multidisciplinary European network that was founded in 2006\, and has evolved over the course of themes\, contents\, partners and leaders. Human Cities – SMOTIES is the continuation of the Human \nCities_Challenging the City Scale project (2014-2018)\, for which the Cité du design was the lead partner and which examined the role of inhabitants in the co-creation of the contemporary city to improve the habitability of public spaces. \nThis new Human Cities – SMOTIES project is led by the Politecnico di Milano\, who will examine\, together with the ten European partners (including the Cité du design)\, the creativity in small and remote places. These places are depositories of material and immaterial culture at risk to be undervalued\, not consolidtaed or handed down\, and hence lost. Through a shared methodology that will ensure the involvement of local communities through co-creation\, masterclasses and prototyping studios\, these remote territories will benefit from the production of cultural and creative works in public spaces\, carried out with the ten partners identified in this project as nodes of creativity. These are public institutions\, design centres\, creative agencies\, national associations\, research centres or university design departments\, located in ten European cities: \nMilan\, Italy\, Politecnico di Milano\, Design Department\nSaint-Étienne\, France\, Cité du design ‐ École Supérieure d’Art et de Design\nGraz\, Austria\, FH Joanneum\, University of Applied Sciences\, Institute of Design & Communication\,\nErmoupoli\, Greece\, University of the Aegean\, Department of Product and Systems Design Engineering\,\nLjubljana\, Slovenia\, Urban Planning Institute of the Republic of Slovenia\nLondon\, UK\, Clear Village Trustee Limited\nTallinn\, Estonia\, Estonian Association of Designers\nCieszyn\, Poland\, Zamek CieszynFunchal\,\nFunchal\, Portugal\, Universidade da Madeira\, Art & Design \n  \nREGISTRATION\nclick here\n\n\n \n\n \n\n\nC O N T A C T \nInge Eller\nProject Officer\nHuman Cities‐SMOTIES Cité du design-Esadse\ninge.eller@citedudesign.com\n+33 6 22 56 89 34 \n

SUMMARY:Fourth Wuhan Creative Cities Roundtable Conference
DESCRIPTION:As part of the activities for the Wuhan Design Day 2021 & Sixth Wuhan Design Biennale (01-12 November 2021)\, the Wuhan Creative Cities Roundtable Conference will celebrate its fourth edition. The conference will be moderated by Former ICoD President\, David Grossman. The sessions around the topic ‘developing infrastructure for the creative industries’ will be open to observers. The Conference will have a hybrid format\, with international cities attending on-line and Chinese domestic cities joining on-site. The event will take place in three parts: presentations by invited Creative Cities\, three moderated panels and a roundtable discussion. To promote effective on-line participation and in-depth discussion\, 15 keynote speakers have been invited representing various creative disciplines from nine (9) Chinese cities and five (5) creative cities from adjacent time zones\, for the one and a half days’ discussion. \nTOPICS \nDefining the Creative Industries: What does it mean to be a “creative industry”? The word “creative” means different things to different audiences and in different languages. There are important implications to the different meanings and it is the responsibility of the creative professional communities themselves to make sure that what they do is properly understood and conveyed – by the professionals themselves and by government\, industry and the public. \nImportance of Professionalism in Creative Disciplines: Too often\, practitioners in the creative disciplines are surrounded by a mystique that makes it difficult for others to understand what it is they do\, and how they do it. In fact\, this often diminishes our influence and status\, putting us at a disadvantage when compared to other professionals. It is important for creative communities to adopt features of other professional communities in terms of language rigor\, standards of practice\, codes of ethics\, life-long learning\, and especially\, concepts of social and community responsibility\, to ensure maximum contribution to society. \nSoft Infrastructure of Creative Industries: Like any other industry\, the creative industries require a supportive infrastructure\, provided by government and society. Unlike the infrastructure of traditional industries which are usually “hard” (consisting of investment in physical infrastructures of steel\, concrete\, energy and technologies)\, the infrastructures of the creative industries are “soft”\, consisting of the training of young practitioners\, ensuring opportunities to gain experience\, and conditions that support professional community cohesion (internal and external formats for exchange and communications\, formats for the development of shared standards and codes of ethics\, mechanisms for promotion\, etc.). What are the special features of a “soft” infrastructure and how can this be best achieved? \nThose interested in registering for this event can do so here until 30 October 2021. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact Cindy Lee (wuhan_design@yeah.net) \n\nFurther information: \n\nRegistration\nAgenda\nList of Speakers\nDescription of Concept\nGuidelines for Online Observers
