SUMMARY:Seoul Design International Forum 2023

We would like to carry out discussions on how our city\, Seoul\, is currently being illuminated with participants by inviting the best-in-class speakers who are global designers\, architects\, and experts in the field\, under the vision of ‘Humanising Cities’ that is not being prioritized at all while being taken for granted. SUMMARY:NEXT23 // Contemporary SA designers and craft artisans set sights on global
DESCRIPTION:From voluptuous\, earthy ceramics and traditional-with-a-twist textiles to intricately patterned hand-woven cloth in seasonal colours\, the latest in South African creativity and artisanal mastery will be on show as part of NEXT23 at Decorex Cape Town\, the country’s leading decor and design showcase\, which runs at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from 22 to 25 June 2023. \nAn annual presentation of export-worthy designs\, the NEXT Trade Exhibition is proudly presented by the Craft and Design Institute (CDI)\, a South African non-profit with over two decades of success in developing creative people\, small businesses\, and the craft and design sector at large. The showcase\, which is coordinated by the CDI’s Fran Stewart\, is aimed largely at assisting buyers who are sourcing for the global market\, while bolstering local retailers too. NEXT has over several years attracted international trade buyers annually from a diverse array of countries such as Denmark\, France\, Sweden\, Italy and the US\, among others. \nFor 2023\, there are 24 exhibitors who hail from across the nation and represent the best of South African craft and design – a balanced blend of well-established and award-winning names\, mid-career designers and newcomers. What links them is quality of their output and high production capacity to meet potential export demands. \n© Love Supreme \nAll of the NEXT23 exhibitors have been coached through the CDI’s export development programme\, which has supported over 70 businesses since inception. This programme has been running for several years and was initiated and run with the support of the Dutch Centre for the Promotion of Imports from Developing Countries (CBI). \n\nNEXT was launched in 2018\, and has grown annually. This is the sixth consecutive year that the CDI has staged the exhibition (having gone entirely virtual during Covid)\, and the 2023 showcase builds on the momentum of previous success stories. Says Stewart\, ‘Having witnessed the development and evolution of these exhibitors over time\, it is particularly pleasing to see how their design sensibility has deepened as their commercial viability increases. We are really heartened when we see local makers being able to expand their businesses by broadening the size of their buying audiences through access to export market support\, such as that provided by us at the CDI.’ NEXT23 will have a physical iteration at Decorex Cape Town\, to enable visiting buyers – and members of the public – to view the new and exciting collections and ranges. Alongside this\, a digital catalogue of the exhibition enables those not able to physically attend the show to purvey all the fresh directions online and access information about each of the exhibitors. \nPieces by all 24 NEXT23 participants will be on display for all four days of Decorex Cape Town\, between 10h00 and 18h00\, where guests will be able to engage with the CDI and the exhibitors themselves. \n  \n\n  \n\n  \nC O N T A C T \n\ninfo@thecdi.org.za \n\n  \nF U R T H E R   I N F O R MA T I O N \nclick here \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Creative Exchange and cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL 2023
DESCRIPTION:In 2023\, the Mission Network of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (#cocreateSANL) and the Craft and Design Institute (CDI) are hosting a series of events to explore the concept of circularity in the African context – the challenges\, successes and the opportunities. \nIn partnership with the City of Cape Town\, Green Cape\, the African Circular Economy Network(ACEN) and Circular South Africa (CSA)\, the series of events will examine the power of design to tackle current socio-economic and environmental challenges. The events will gather academics\, policymakers\, government officials\, professionals\, civil society members\, entrepreneurs and creative thinkers to discuss\, engage\, learn\, and spark new ideas. \nTwo Creative Exchange events will be hosted – one in June and another in July\, as well as which will clminate in a 2023 #cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL to be hosted in August. These knowledge exchange platforms gather people in a sharing space\, to learn and spark new ideas. \nThe Creative Exchanges and the #cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL will explore the design of better systems\, processes and products that can benefit citizens\, the environment\, and lead to a more prosperous circular and green economy. The hope is to create a broader community of diverse skills and perspectives; and inspire collaborative action. \nThe main theme for the event is South Africa’s future is circular – Reimagining our world: circular design in SA.   \nThe first Creative Exchange will ask: How can we cocreate new ways to produce\, consume and live while respecting our natural resources? \nIn July\, the Creative Exchange will be Reimagining style and travel: circularity in Fashion and tourism. \nThese discussions will explore a little deeper into what being circular means in an African context\, and why the design of better systems\, processes and products are vital\, and unpack major collaborate efforts such as the South African Plastics Pact. \n  \n  \n\n  \nC O N T A C T \n\nNatasha Prince\nnatasha.prince@thecdi.org.za \n  \n\nF U R T H E R   I N F O R M A T I O N \nclick here

SUMMARY:DESIGN MONTH GRAZ 2023
DESCRIPTION:The festival boasts an extensive and multifaceted schedule\, spanning across the numerous domains of design. Over the course of a month\, attendees can expect to immerse themselves in exhibitions\, workshops\, meetings\, and presentations\, all while enjoying a plethora of individual initiatives from local designers\, design schools and universities\, and commercial entities. Through this event\, participants have the opportunity to connect\, showcase their work\, and underscore the significance of design in daily life\, as well as the economic value of creative endeavors and the future’s challenges. \n  \nDesign Month Graz 2023 is all about the focus topic Revolution. Revolution\, understood as a fundamental upheaval of the past\, has become an unmistakable constant in recent years. Its concomitants – from pandemics to war – irritate and unsettle. Revolution in today’s sense\, however\, is complex; it is digital\, social\, green\, economic. And revolution means speed. It is needed to drive change more urgently\, to find solutions more quickly. “Soft transformation” alone will not be enough to move society and the economy forward in a positive way. The creative industries are driving this revolution\, and their players are developing intelligent and disruptive methods to find new ways and solutions to complex issues. Design and creativity offer the necessary tools and techniques for this\, and for everyone. In the area of tension between revolution and continuity\, between disruption and tradition\, between “no longer usable” and “not yet imaginable”\, Design Month Graz 2023 offers a platform to bring these multiple revolutions to the public’s attention. A lot is at stake. And nothing will ever be the same again. But things are moving forward. \n  \n  \n\nDesign Month Graz 2023\nMAY 6 – JUNE 4\, 2023\n\n  \n  \n  \nF U R T H E R  I N F O R M A T I O N \nwww.designmonat.at \nC O N T A C T \noffice@cis.at

SUMMARY:BILBAO BIZKAIA DESIGN WEEK 2022
DESCRIPTION:EC(H)O-SYSTEM/ERRESONANTZIA\nHow do design and creativity vibrate and make us vibrate?\nHow do they resonate in our daily lives? How can we promote the development of the creative ecosystem in terms of diversity\, cooperation and sustainability so that it is more vibrant? BBDW22 proposes an exercise to listen actively to the ecosystem\, to pay attention to the rebounding echo of professionals\, users and design itself\, to recognise oneself\, to value oneself and to think collectively about what we can do together. \nBBDW is dedicating the 2022 and 2023 editions to listening and contributing to the interaction of the EC(H)O-SYSTEM of design and creativity in Bilbao-Bizkaia\, hubs of innovation and collaboration. The aim is to highlight the creative agents of the region\, to showcase their diversity (types\, areas\, career paths…) and to promote symbiotic and mutual relations\, both among the creative sectors themselves and with other economic and social sectors. \nBBDW22\, under the title ERRESONANTZIA\, focuses on “the ECHO”\, as a vibrant acoustic phenomenon of listening and reverberation. We start with the concept of “Resonance”\, of the sociologist Hartmut Rosa\, as an attitude of profound listening\, with the aim of enabling all the agents to speak with their own voices\, in order to generate a common echo from the collective intelligence. \nTo observe how design and creativity are present in our lives\, at home\, at work\, in our leisure activities\, in the way we organise ourselves\, in the products and services we use\, in the small details. To listen with all our sense. To go more deeply into the context closest to home. To get to know the agents\, their interests and proposals. To pay attention to what there is\, what is already taking place\, observing both the strengths to be developed and the points that need to be built upon and improved. \nAt this moment we are closing the final programme but this is a brief summary of the activities that will be included: \n\nConferences\nWorkshops\nGuide visits\nExhibitions \nNetworkings\nPerformances\n\n\n\n  \nC O N T A C T \ncgutierrez@bilbaoekintza.bilbao.eus \nF U R T H E R  I N F O R M A T I O N \nclick here

SUMMARY:#cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL 2022 in Cape Town focusses on water-sensitive design
DESCRIPTION:The #cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL 2022 in Cape Town\, brought into sharp focus the life-sustaining significance of water and the valuable role it has in shaping healthy\, equitable and sustainable blue-green cities for all African citizens. \n\n\n Drawing on four monthly Creative Exchange events held from April – September in the city\, under the theme – Designing African blue-green cities for all – the Design Festival focused on how we design better processes\, systems and products that can lead to a more water secure future\, particularly in an African context. \n\n\nOn Day 1\, the festival focused on water and Day 2\, explored what it means to keep citizens at the centre. The event featured a variety of experts across a range of disciplines\, to share knowledge\, and ask provocative questions to create a broader community of diverse skills and perspectives\, breaking down silos\, and inspiring collaborative action to inspire water-sensitive design. \n\n\nAn initiative of the Mission Network of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in South Africa\, the annual festival celebrates and examines the power of design to tackle current socio-economic and environmental challenges within an African context. \n\n\n The festival was organised in collaboration with the Craft and Design Institute (CDI)\, and in 2022 the Creative Exchanges and festival have been curated in partnership with / curated with the support of the University of Cape Town’s Future Water Institute\, the City of Cape Town and the Institute for Landscape Architecture in South Africa.  \n\n\nWith the broad theme: “Designing African blue-green cities for all”\, and through the lens of water sensitive design the #cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL 2022 invited subject experts to talk on a range of topics under the key pillars: \nWater in focus: Our future is undeniably impacted by climate change caused by humans\, along with the complex challenges of rapid urban growth that threaten water supplies. There is a great urgency to focus on the critical state of water. In this context\, how do we build in balance with nature? What are the challenges and how effective are the existing solutions and innovations? \n Citizens in focus: Urbanisation brings both challenges and opportunities. Is it possible to design solutions for cities that are good for the natural environment and also good for the health and wellbeing of citizens? How impactful is public engagement and citizens’ voices. When citizens have conflicting needs\, how do we find common ground? Using green and blue design solutions\, we can build healthy cities and explore effective ways to promote health and well-being. \n This year the festival culminated in the #cocreate Blue-Green Cities Design Awards to acknowledge people who have played a significant role in the water sector. The awards ceremony celebrated those who have uplifted communities and who strive to develop sustainable innovations and inclusive systems within our cities and recognised projects that promote water sensitive design\, the development of resilient cities\, and that showcase the value of building in harmony with nature for all citizens. \nThe project is aligned to UN Sustainable Development Goals 6 (Clean water and sanitation) and 11 (Sustainable cities and communities). \n \n\nF U R T H E R   I N F O R M A T I O N \nWatch the #cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL 2022 on YouTube here: \nDay 1 – Water in focus: https://youtu.be/hedGvh3FbbU \nDay 2 – Citizens in focus: https://youtu.be/Fnl_kXemdlg \nC O N T A C T \nEmail: info@thecdi.org.za\n  \n  \n

They go phygital … WONDER inspires with how the next generation thinks about the sustainable future of the world\, city and region. \nThe theme Let’s get phygital (a contraction of ‘physical’ and ‘digital’) was aptly designed in the campaign image by the West Flemish illustrator Jonas Devacht. Jonas is an alumnus of the Devine programme at Howest and held the K-TOTEM at Kortrijk Station in 2021. \nPartners and programme\n\nParticipating organisations this year are Designregio Kortrijk\, Howest with the courses Industrial Product Design\, Digital Design and Development and Digital Arts and Entertainment\, Intercommunale Leiedal\, Texture\, Bib Kortrijk\, arts centre BUDA and Voka West-Vlaanderen. They are building a programme consisting of exhibitions\, installations and activities with a focus on the next generation. How do young designers and companies respond to social challenges such as digitisation and sustainability? WONDER wants to surprise its visitors\, have them dare to look at what is and wonder about what is to come. \n“During WONDER\, all the creative talent in Kortrijk can once again show itself to the general public. After a successful edition last year at the Site Van Marcke\, WONDER returns to the centre of the city and the visit is again completely free.” Ruth Vandenberghe\, mayor \nThe Budafabriek will be the beating heart. But also many external parties will participate with installations\, expositions and activities spread throughout the city centre. WONDER will therefore once again be a celebration of creativity for young and old. \nWONDER will be free to visit. The detailed programme will be announced in mid-September. \nOrganisations\, companies or people interested in participating can contact Designregio Kortrijk: info@designregio-kortrijk.be \n\nC O N T A C T \ninfo@designregio-kortrijk.be \nF U R T H E R  I N F O R M A T I O N \nWonderkortrijk.be
