DESCRIPTION:Q&A – Questions & Answers \nLooking for questions and answers highlights the fact that good design always entails good thinking. Since quite a while\, the value of design has surpassed making mere objects and included insight and questioning the obvious.\nThe theme encourages us towards open-mindedness\, vision\, exploration and discovery. Criticality is important\, and so is openness before options. The theme tackles social questions that impact the future.\nHow can we use design to build better cities and a better society? How could design-thinking benefit new areas? We must ask the right questions and come up with answers that remain relevant in the future. The theme includes topics like urban development\, education and learning\, sustainable development\, spaces and houses\, as well as entrepreneurship and collaboration in the creative fields. \nAnother important dimension is internationality. Helsinki Design Week has kicked off and chairs a new World Design Weeks networks in a time when international interactivity faces new challenges and questions. Populism\, nationalism and protectionism emerge in many countries\, but new ideas and innovations require openness\, engagement and tolerance to develop.\nDuring the years to come\, we need to convince national organizations that international networking and dialogue produce more common good than short-sighted pursuit of national interest. SUMMARY:1st Seoul Biennale of Architecture
DESCRIPTION:The cities of the world gather in Seoul to explore the present and future of urban civilization. How are we going to share breathable air\, drinking water land and energy for living and manufacturing? \nUnder environmental crisis and social injustice\, we propose the urban vision of sharing and manufacturing over possession and consumption. \nThe Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2017 is an experimental platform for an imminent urbanism that goes beyond human-centered functions\, ownership\, and consumption to a commons of\, technologies\, resources and production. They propose nine essential commons as a feasible path towards a sustainable and just urbanism. From both ecological and technological problems\, this frame foregrounds a study not of a distant utopia but of the near future. \nThe four ecology commons are air\, water\, fire and earth. The five technology commons are making\, moving\, communicating\, sensing and recycling. \nBased on the theme of “Imminent Commons\,” the Seoul Biennale will be held from September 2 to November 5. SUMMARY:KAUNAS PHOTO Festival
DESCRIPTION:KAUNAS PHOTO festival has been a festival of premières for future stars of photography since its launch in 2004. The festival is organized every year in Kaunas\, the second largest city of Lithuania. Being the longest- running photographic festival in the Baltic States\, KAUNAS PHOTO is a platform for dialogue around contemporary photographic creation between North and South\, East and West. While being the prime event of art photography in Lithuania\, KAUNAS PHOTO does not solely focus on Lithuanian photography. Its programs and projects\, such as exhibition and book “Generation ’74. 11 European Photographers born in 1974” feature a vast menu of internationally acclaimed photographers. \nThanks to a variety of exhibitions\, ranging from venues of National M. K. Čiurlionis Art Museum\, to mid-sided galleries\, such as Kaunas Photography Gallery\, Meno Parkas gallery\, Post Gallery\, smaller adapted venues and outdoor exhibitions\, KAUNAS PHOTO festival is the most attended photographic event in Lithuania\, comprising 200-300 participants per year’s program and counting its audience by tens of thousands of local visitors. Besides numerous exhibitions\, the festival publishes photography books\, hosts artist talks\, projection nights\, portfolio reviews KAUNAS PHOTO STAR and organises annual distance-based portfolio reviews on its on-line platform\, folioPORT.org. \nBesides domestically hosted exhibitions in Kaunas\, the festival also shows exhibitions in other Lithuanian towns and villages. Moreover\, KAUNAS PHOTO holds exhibitions (of mostly Lithuanian photography) abroad. DESCRIPTION:From May 24 to 26\, the Ville de Montréal’s Bureau du design attended for the third time at the C2 Montréal immersive event (2013 and 2014 editions)\, with its CODE SOUVENIR MONTRÉAL market.  The space\, dedicated to promoting made-in-Montréal creativity\, brought together 27 designers whose work was featured in the CODE SOUVENIR MONTRÉAL 2016–2017 catalogue. DESCRIPTION:The month of May focused on Designmonat Graz (Month of Design). An extensive programme provided an insight into different creative disciplines and links with various designers. Events such as exhibitions\, workshops or lectures invite you to networking in the UNESCO City of Design Graz. \nFrom 29th April to 28th May\, Designmonat Graz 2017 is coordinated and organised by Creative In-dustries Styria (CIS) – already for the ninth time. There is a persistent strong interest in the event. \nA successful Designmonat Graz 2017 turned Graz into an internationally renowned hotspot of design. In May 91\,100 people visited 126 single events\, that were staged with 101 programme partners and 431 designers or labels. About 200 reports of Designmonat Graz in print\, TV and radio media\, as well as numerous national and international postings\, articles and blog posts on online portals and social media channels are a proof of the powerful international radiance of the festival. \nIn the course of Designmonat Graz 2017 the programme focuses on ‘Smart Design – Smart Production’ and deals with the age of digital networking and the multifarious tools of the Digital Revolution. Last but not least\, the protagonists of the creative industries – developers\, researchers\, programmers and designers – are the ones who created and enabled the new technological age. There are also plans for a ‘Smartness Conference’ on this subject. \nMajor events\nThe exhibition ‘SELECTED’ has a long tradition in terms of current interior design trends of different brands from diverse countries. What is new\, is not only the presented trends but also the location because this year the exhibition is staged in the Museum of Natural History at Joanneumsviertel.\nThe successful format ‘Design in the City’ continues to actively involve commercial companies of Graz in the programme of Designmonat. By doing so\, the participating companies launch design activities in addition to their everyday business. Further\, the fashion and design festival ‘assembly’ will once more be a part of Designmonat Graz. \nEstablished partners\nDesignmonat Graz will again include the production ‘Klanglicht’ of Bühnen Graz – this year it will take place on two days at selected locations. Schloss Hollenegg for Design invites to the exhibition MORPHOSIS around the topic ‘change\, evolution and transformation/metamorphosis’. The fans of Fesch’Markt may also look forward to the month of May. In cooperation with FH Joanneum\, the Department of Media & Design wants to familiarise us with the media design of the 1970s. The exhibition called ‘The Orange Age’ presents audio and TV devices as well as communication and office appliances\, provided by Heinz Fischer. In addition\, we plan lectures on the issue of smart communication in the future. \nNew accents\n‘Smart Urban Privacy’ is the name of a cooperation with Holzcluster Styria\, in the course of which we present objects\, that enable a temporary retreat at lively\, public locations. The smart city furniture for ‘digital natives’ or ‘digital immigrants’ rely of course on the smart material wood. The exhibitions were first mounted at the15th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia (also known as the Venice Architecture Biennale) in 2016. DESCRIPTION:The seventh edition of Operæ gathers public and experts around projects linked by a focus on materials as well as on processes and craft technique. The event suggests a landscape inhabited by objects carriers of new values – whether economic\, social\, productive or relational – that arise from the intersection between craft skills and digital knowledge\, local practices and global needs\, specialized competences and collective narratives. \nThe event offers the opportunity to discover new products\, take note of the emerging phenomena\, get in touch with the actors of the design process as well as to stop and think about those aspects that design industry touches. Thanks to a program of meetings with personalities from the world of design\, economy and culture and a full calendar of workshops\, Operæ involves professionals as well as fans and curious. \nOver time Operæ has become an incubator of stories: it brings to the fore experimental\, innovative and multidisciplinary approaches and allows designers to sell their products and visitors to buy objects that are unique or produced in limited series. \nFor the 2016 edition Operæ is enriched by the presence of Annalisa Rosso\, independent design and architecture journalist\, in the role of curator. SUMMARY:UNESCO’S Creative Cities’ Network to meet in Östersund\, Sweden
DESCRIPTION:  \nÖstersund has set a new standard for the annual meetings of UNESCO Creative Cities Network. The tenth annual meeting was less formal\, with more experiences and more creative discussions. \n– Östersund has taken the annual meeting to a new level. Never before in the history of the network has the delegates been offered such a complete experience of food\, culture\, meetings and exchanges of ideas with a local foundation. This is what the network is all about\, meeting\, exchanging knowledge and experiencing things together\, says Charles Landry\, keynote speaker and moderator at the annual meeting. \nMeetings between people\n250 delegates from 95 cities from all over the World have met\, have eaten local food and have agreed upon future strategies for cultural development of the member cities. The Swedish Minister for Culture and Democracy\, Alice Bah Kuhnke\, says that the meetings between people are decisive. \n– The annual meeting of UNESCO Creative Cities Network is important because it creates meeting places\, meetings between people everywhere with a focus on the future. We need to use all of our creativity\, sympathy and innovation to meet the challenges of the future around the World. I hope that all delegates will take their new ideas with them and implement them at home\, says Alice Bah Kuhnke\, the Swedish Minister for Culture and Democracy. \nA conference with experiences\nThe delegates and their accompaniers have eaten locally produced food\, have made a time trip at Jamtli regional museum\, have taken a ride in vintage cars\, have held workshops\, have seen the World design exhibition SZ-DAY\, have been offered high class lectures at Creative Business and much more. During the closing dinner at Thursday night the delegates were introduced to a powerful food and music experience with CrEATive Östersund. Both UNESCO delegates and local residents participated\, and chefs from all over the World participated in preparing the food. \n– We have shown that Östersund is a powerful force to be reckoned with when it comes to creativity\, culture and gastronomy. Everyone involved have made an excellent contribution to the arrangement of the conference! The goal now is to assume an even bigger role nationally within this field. We are the only Swedish city who is a member of the network\, and we have a lot of knowledge and experience to share\, says Dag Hartman\, the Project Manager for Region Jämtland Härjedalen for the UNESCO meeting. \nPassing on the torch\n \nDuring the annual meeting the delegates have decided upon a vision and an action plan for how culture and creativity will be used to create a sustainable future connecting urban and rural areas within the framework of the 2030 Sustainable Agenda for Sustainable Development. \n– The tenth annual meeting of UNESCOs Creative Cities Network has confirmed the importance of culture and creativity as enablers for a sustainable development in urban areas\, one month ahead of the UN conference on housing and sustainable urban development (Habitat III)\, which will be held in Quito next month\, says Irina Bokova\, Director-General of UNESCO. \nÖstersund is now passing the torch to the city of Enghien-les-Bains in France\, where the annual meeting of 2017 will be held. \n\n______________________________________ \nThe City of Östersund was designated as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2010. Östersund was awarded this designation because of the city’s gastronomic entrepreneurs and the Jämtland Härjedalen region’s gastronomic culture and traditions\, which are rooted in locally and sustainably produced food. \nUNESCO Creative Cities Network 10th Annual Meeting was held September 14-16 in Östersund\, Sweden. Held annually in September\, the multidisciplinary festival presents design from a number of fields as well as fashion\, architecture and urban culture. The next Helsinki Design Week will be held 01.–11.9.2016. \nHelsinki Design Week presents the new faces and phenomena of design\, promotes design internationally in collaboration with various partners and offers city citizens through design a forum to participate in developing and discussing the city and its culture.
