SUMMARY:BILBAO BIZKAIA DESIGN WEEK 2024
DESCRIPTION:How we can design with people and the environment in mind\, and what does it mean to design with life at the centre?\n\nBiotik Design: Territories for Life invites us to change the lenses with which we work in creative processes to adopt a transformative perspective in a current context that is increasingly complex. Designing biotically means observing and proposing from an ecological\, inclusive\, collaborative\, open source and experimental perspective. This tenth edition of BBDW proposes to rethink creative practices in order to orient them towards the design of a more sustainable\, fair and innovative future. \n  \nBBDW24 is organized around five narratives: \n\nExploring Experimental Innovation: explore and experiment with new ideas and technologies in design\, promoting curiosity\, critical thinking and social transformation through creative and speculative approaches.\nPromoting a sustainable future: promote responsible and conscious designs that optimise resources\, minimise externalities and foster a harmonious relationship with the natural environment.\nBuilding equality and diversity: create inclusive and equitable environments that appreciate and promote equality\, breaking down traditional paradigms and fostering diversity and reciprocity.\nEncouraging Collaborative Communities: foster collaboration and co-creation in urban and community design\, taking into account the needs and expectations of all the people involved\, and enhancing collective intelligence.\nEmbracing Open Creativity: develop open source design solutions that ensure free access\, distribution and reuse\, fostering community management of resources and the creation of the commons\n\n\nBilbao Bizkaia Design Week 2024 gives shape to the process where different audiences interact: from professionals\, organizations\, students and training centres related to design\, to other environments including public administrations\, associations and the general public. The activities proposed by the curator are linked together and related\, with the aim of generating a collective reflection with tangible results. \nKey concepts for the audience to digest and transform into proposals will be introduced by international speakers at Kaixo!\, the opening event. These include among others\, Gabriela Rendón\, architect and professor at the Parsons School in New York; and Martí Guixé\, industrial and interior designer who works between Barcelona and Berlin. \nBased on these ideas\, and after a Master class\, professionals and organizations from Bizkaia will generate a series of recommendations to activate a design that promotes living things in Bizkaia which will be set out in a “Decalogue of Biotic Design”. \nAt the Diseñatón\, approximately fifty students from nine design schools will respond to the challenges posed by local organizations linked to the narratives of Biotik Design\, and use the decalogue as a measure of the success of the proposals made. \nOn the other hand\, an Action and Installation developed by the international artist Maider López\, will focus on the capacity of citizens to build cities and care\, connecting BBDW24 with the general public. \nLastly\, Partekatu! closes the week with a festive event including some surprises to meet up and display the results of the collective process. \n\nC O N T A C T \nCarolina Gutiérrez Gabriel\nE: cgutierrez@bilbaoekintza.bilbao.eus \nF U R T H E R  I N F O R M A T I O N\nclick here \n  \n

SUMMARY:COVILHÃ CREATIVE WEEK 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Municipality of Covilhã is pleased to announce the third edition of Covilhã Creative Week (CCW)\, from November 8th to 14th 2024. \nThe event will be held under the theme “Design and the City” understanding the first as a fundamental tool for humanizing urban and peri-urban spaces\, which shape our collective and shared imaginations of the places we inhabit and experience. The city is not a final destination but a continuous\, open-ended project: a succession of spatial and temporal phases in which we\, its inhabitants\, participate daily and actively. It is\, therefore\, like a book that best narrates the history and transformations brought about “in” and “by” its communities. \nTherefore\, Covilhã Creative Week will present a diverse and open program to the community\, involving various local and national entities in multiple cultural activities. The Municipal Day for Culture\, November 8th\, marks the beginning of the celebrations and the third anniversary of our city’s designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Design. \nThe Municipality believes that “Weaving the Future” involves increasingly raising public awareness about the role of design in improving quality of life and in valuing endogenous resources of the territory\, whether through the promotion of inclusion and cultural\, social\, and environmental sustainability\, the preservation of a common heritage\, or the optimization of living conditions for everyone\, in the development of mobility\, and the promotion of accessibility to public spaces and services. In this context\, there will be showcases of multiple entities and entrepreneurs who contribute to developing a territorially-based creative ecosystem\, attracting the general community to the design culture. \n\nC O N T A C T \nE: covilha.criativa@cm-covilha.pt \nF U R T H E R  I N F O R M A T I O N \nclick here \n

SUMMARY:Kaunas Art Book Fair
DESCRIPTION:“Kaunas Art Book Fair” is a value-creating and networking event\, held annually since 2019 in Kaunas\, Lithuania. It focuses exclusively on the culture of art book publishing\, the creation of a new community\, the support of the existing one and the initiation of global trends in Lithuania. The programme of the fair consists of three parts: \n\nan art book fair\neducational/public programme for children and adults\nart book exhibition. “Kaunas Art Book Fair” is organized by Kaunas Photography Gallery and in 2024 will be held for the 6th time.\n\nIn the context of other book (especially commercial) or art fairs\, this fair stands out because it upholds the principle of publishing as an artistic practice and provides an accessible opportunity for emerging artists\, publishers\, booksellers\, designers of all kinds to showcase their latest artistic publications. It is the only professionally organised annual art publication event in the Baltic states. \nThe aim is to create a public that understands the value of an art book and an active community of designers\, artists and publishers. The aim is that art publications should not only be appreciated by a narrow circle of people interested in art and culture\, but that art books should be added to the home libraries of a wider audience\, and that artists and publishers should discover new audiences and broaden their readership. Also\, for the art book to educate and broaden the worldview of the readers\, for the subtleties of book publishing (printing\, binding\, choice of paper\, etc.) to be addressed\, for the community of art book authors and publishers from different disciplines to come together and share their experiences. \nSince 2019\, the fair has developed partnerships with contemporary art bookshop “Six Chairs Books”\, Germany-based publishing house “Steidl”\, National M. K. Ciurlionis Museum of Art\, contemporary art gallery “Meno parkas”\, Vilnius Academy of Arts Kaunas faculty\, Kaunas Vincas Kudirka Public Library\, printing house “Kopa”\, “EU Japan” fund and others. \nThis year\, the organisers want to invite participants from UNESCO Design Cities. We invite you to share art publications published in your city in recent years\, which have been awarded and appreciated\, and which have received attention in the field of design and art. We invite you to be part of the Kaunas Art Book Fair. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nC O N T A C T \nGabrielė Arlauskaitė\n“Kaunas Art Book Fair 2024” Chief Executive Director \nkaunasartbookfair@gmail.com\n  \nF U R T H E R  I N F O R M A T I O N \nclick here \ninstagram

DESCRIPTION:Dundee Design Festival have revealed their commitment to creating one of the world’s most sustainable design festivals ahead of the 5th edition of the festival which takes place from 23 – 29 September. \nPartnerships with V&A Dundee and Bard to repurpose exhibition materials\, Michelin Scotland Innovation Parc to power the festival site with a mix of green and sustainable energy sources\, and Ember to provide electric public transport\, are the first stages for the festival which also has a commitment to using no more than 30% of new materials in the festival build. \n  \n \n  \nDundee Design Festival 2024 (DDF 24) will celebrate the city’s 10th anniversary as a UNESCO City of Design by working with local and international partners to present an ambitious and optimistic programme of design-centered exhibitions\, events and projects. Dundee was the first and remains the UK’s only UNESCO City of Design\, one of a global network of 49 cities around the world. This status recognises the city’s diverse contributions to design in fields including comics\, textiles\, medical innovation and video games. In addition to hosting public facing design events like the biennial festival\, Dundee is the only city in Scotland to have its own dedicated design museum; V&A Dundee as well as two leading art and design universities and Dundee & Angus College who co-founded the UK’s first Service Design Academy with Open Change. The city has a thriving Creative Industries sector with a variety of design related businesses. \n  \n \n\n  \nSpeaking ahead of the festival Annie Marrs\, Lead Officer at UNESCO City of Design Dundee said: \n“We are surrounded by a strong and successful design community here in Dundee. One of the reasons Dundee was designated a UNESCO City of Design is the city’s commitment to design and innovation driving our commitment to sustainable development. It’s natural for us to want to create one of the world’s most sustainable design festivals and ensure that the best in design is showcased to as many people as possible.  \nOur festival’s Creative Director\,  Dr Stacey Hunter is committed to applying a design process to every element of decision making around what we do and don’t include in the festival. By creating a matrix for decisions around sustainability Stacey has helped us to centre our core values and work towards achieving our sustainability goals. \nThere is lots of great work being done in this field\, but the impact of temporary festivals can be significantly negative on our environment. I believe that DDF 24 can be a case study in how cultural organisations and businesses can collaborate to lower their collective carbon footprint.  \nEverything we do is shaped by the values of the UNESCO Creative Cities mission statement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Whenever we embark on a project\, we ask ourselves ‘What difference will this make?’ and we consider how what we do locally helps to achieve a global impact.”  \n  \n \n\n\nCreative Director and festival curator Dr Stacey Hunter said: \n“We are developing partnerships with a variety of organisations who share our values around sustainability and the value of design. It’s been a really exciting phase for us as we\, as a team\, push ourselves to minimise waste and maximise opportunities. \nAs details have emerged about our amazing site at MSIP and our sustainability goals\, design-centred organisations like V&A Dundee and Bard reached out to us with generous offers of materials and infrastructure. For me as a designer and a curator this is a natural way of doing things in Scotland. We are a tight-knit community and Scotland has always been known around the world for its capacity for frugality! Any kind of waste is something that most people working in design are always keen to eliminate and the partnerships we are developing are symbolic of that urge to be efficient. \nOne of the biggest insights I have taken away from working with designers who are tackling sustainability through all sorts of lenses – from toxicity to circularity – is that sustainability is a journey. Eco-shaming is holding people back from trying to improve and taking risks. It’s important to think about a project holistically and stay flexible. Our decision to hold the festival all under one roof at Scotland’s biggest innovation parc was the first step; underpinning all activities at MSIP is a collaborative approach to achieve the goal of net zero so it’s the perfect environment for us to learn and grow. We are working with designers who are pushing the boundaries of their own practice and through conversations with them about their work we’re able to strengthen our knowledge. \nSpecifically for DDF\, I have been mapping potential materials and manufacturers in Dundee to determine the most viable materials\, in terms of availability\, infrastructure\, and the lowest carbon options for constructing our festival infrastructure. Transforming low value available materials into something beautiful sometimes takes longer but thanks to MSIP I have the longest install period for a show I’ve ever had! Material choices and production will be as sustainable and non-polluting as possible – including designing for deconstruction and onward reuse. That means we will be designing in a way that maximises the possibility for us to reuse our displays at future festivals.” \nAs well as a drive to re-use as much material as possible\, Stacey has developed a materials palette guiding the festival’s overall aesthetic from items which can be borrowed or reused such as breeze-blocks\, Heras fencing\, scrap timber and bricks. All of which will help Dundee Design Festival achieve their sustainability goals of using less than 30% virgin materials. \nSpeaking in more detail about the collaborations and process involved in developing one of the world’s most sustainable design festival\, Creative Director Dr Stacey Hunter also said: \n“The beauty and the challenge at MSIP is the scale of the spaces. We need to use all of the available infrastructure and lighting conditions to our advantage whilst ensuring we have a harmonious and exciting balance of dark and light\, height\, density\, volume\, massing and porosity. \nWe are working with renowned lighting designer Emma Jones to use lighting to demarcate vantage points\, cluster areas and quiet zones which will enhance visitor experience and encourage a sense of anticipation\, hospitality and conviviality. These are all techniques that are regularly employed by interior designers and for me\, they demonstrate how you can design a space with far less consumables like paint\, mdf or acrylic. \nWhen I received the Tartan exhibition infrastructure from V&A Dundee\, I had to reimagine it in a completely new configuration for our festival so that it feels fresh and original. I’m working with an excellent designer and fabricator Louise Forbes – she is great at devising the minimum amount of framework required to add to the structures we have. \nFestivals are the ideal platform to experiment with more sustainable approaches. I feel confident that our visitors will fully support the decisions we are making as a team and will hopefully feel empowered to make more sustainable choices for themselves whether it’s DIY at home or a gardening project.” \nCaroline Grewar\, Director of Programme\, V&A Dundee said: “It was extremely important to us from the outset that the Tartan exhibition infrastructure was designed and built to have a life beyond its initial 9-month run at V&A Dundee. We are delighted that the exhibition materials will now have a second home at this year’s Dundee Design Festival less than 5 miles away from the museum\, and we can support the festival team in achieving their sustainability goals of using less than 30% new materials.” \n\n\n \n  \n  \n\nC O N T A C T\n\nowen@ohreally.co.uk\n\nF U R T H E R  I N F O R M A T I O N\n\nclick here

SUMMARY:MUTATIONS: Where is design heading?
DESCRIPTION:To mark its 50th anniversary\, the École de design of the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) is issuing a call for papers for the colloquium MUTATIONS : Où va le design ? (MUTATIONS: Where is Design Heading?)\, to be held in Montreal from September 18 to 20\, 2024. The aim of this event is to explore how design is responding to present day environmental\, social\, and technological mutations\, which innovative practices are being adopted\, and what issues are at stake.  \n  \nAs socially and morally responsible designers\, we must respond to the needs of a world that is up against the wall. The clock of humanity is always striking thirteen. \nVictor Papanek\, Design for the Real World\, 1971  \nIn his manifesto Design for a Real World published some fifty years ago — just as the École de design of UQAM was opening its doors — Victor Papanek was already stressing  the importance of integrating social and environmental concerns into the design process. Since then\, as design evolved beyond its traditional role of primarily producing physical objects\, it has emerged as a powerful force that influences our social interactions\, cultural and economic systems\, as well as our environment. But our times\, faced with monumental challenges — escalating disparities\, erosion of social cohesion\, cultural polarization\,  ongoing crisis of displaced populations\, intensifying climate emergency — are once again prompting us to question the role of design\, at a time when the technological acceleration affecting all spheres of human activity is raising the very question of the discipline’s future. The colloquium MUTATIONS : Où va le design ? offers an opportunity for collective reflection on these issues\, to help shape a more stable and equitable future. \n\nC O N T A C T \nalessandra.amandine@uqam.ca \nlegault.rejean@uqam.ca \n  \nF U R T H E R   I N F O R M A T I O N \nclick her

SUMMARY:Seoul Design 2024 // Kick Off
DESCRIPTION:Seoul Design 2024 will kick off on October 17 at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul. Already recognized as the city’s premier MICE festival\, this 11th edition stands out with its theme\, “/imagine Tomorrow.” The focus is on predicting and envisioning\, through design\, how artificial intelligence (AI) will transform the future of everyday life. \nUnlike previous years\, which focused on citizen engagement and experiences as a cultural design event\, this year’s Seoul Design marks a shift toward an industry-focused fair\, placing designers and companies at the forefront. With a broad agenda and the latest design products\, Seoul Design 2024 will expand its breadth and depth to evolve from a civic festival focused on public engagement and experience into a city-wide celebration in collaboration with Dongdaemun.\nSeoul Design 2024 offers designers opportunities to work\, while providing companies a platform to promote their products and develop new sales channels. The Young Designer+Corporate Brand Development Program allows emerging designers to gain hands-on experience in product development through collaboration with established companies. The DDP Design Launching Fair connects experienced designers with manufacturing companies\, matching their ideas to enhance product competitiveness. Additionally\, initiatives like the Startup Fostering and Design Capacity Enhancement Project\, the Sustainable Product Service Market Development Project\, and the SME Industrial Design Development Project offer support to design companies at various stages of business growth\, helping them to navigate the market and showcase their products. These platforms will hopefully help designers connect with a wide range of experts and buyers\, enabling them to take the next step forward together. \nOne of the standout exhibitions is Light Architecture by world-renowned media artist Yiyun Kang. A professor of industrial design at KAIST and a collaborator with Google\, NASA\, and BTS\, Kang has presented experiential media exhibitions. At this particular exhibition\, her vision of a future AI architecture that co-evolves with humanity is brought to life through a large-scale installation. The aim to make the audience recognize their responsibility in designing AI\, with the hope that AI will lead to a future filled with joy rather than fear. \nAnother highlight of Seoul Design 2024 is the opening stage performance featuring nævis\, a virtual artist from SM Entertainment. This performance delves into themes of existence beyond gods and humans—a concept that has intrigued humanity since ancient times. \nOn day one\, the theme “AI EFFECTS” will be explored by artist Yiyun Kang\, Director Sohyeong Roh of Art Center Nabi\, and curator Daehyung Lee as they examine the intersection of AI and art. Day two will focus on “The Future of Design Shaped by Generative AI\,” with author Gilyoung Song\, Advisor Sahbeom Byun of Plus X\, and patent attorney Byungjun Bok providing diverse perspectives. The final day\, themed “Trends 2025\,” will feature discussions led by Professor Nando Kim of Seoul National University\, author Seungyeon Cho\, and Director Jukka Savolainen of the AD Museum\, as they share predictions for next year’s design trends and discuss the future direction of the design industry. Beginning with Seoul Design 2024\, the conference program will establish itself as the premier platform for design lectures\, featuring top speakers forecasting future design trends.\n\n\n\nC O N T A C T \n\n\nihbae@seouldesign.or.kr\n\n\nF U R T H E R  I N F O R M A T I O N\nclick here

SUMMARY:Design Month Festival 2024
DESCRIPTION:Our world is in upheaval. Crises and uncertainties dominate. The time for lip service is over. The question is “What now!” – what to do? What is needed now? The what and how of previous answers are not enough. We need a different what\, a new how. We need new and different answers – solutions\, visions and methods that offer a way out. What potential can we offer to counter the dystopias? One thing is clear: Not one discipline alone will “save the world”. It needs the creative power of many – it needs idea generators and implementers in many areas. \nWhat now! How can we use our potential for a good future? \nIn different areas: Mobility\, Food\, Industry 4.0\, Housing & Architecture or Circular Economy & Resources. We are looking for answers and scenarios to questions such as: \n\nMobility – own or use?Which mobility solutions will really move us forward?\nLab meat & co – how can scientific successes reach our bellies?\nWaste as a raw material\, repairing instead of producing – how can we boost the circular economy?\nIndustry & automation – how can industry return to cities?\nModular\, sustainable\, flexible building and living:What kind of architecture and urban design do people need?\nHow can we use AI as an opportunity instead of demonizing it?\n\n  \nA small preview of the extensive program at this year’s Design Month Festival Graz

SUMMARY:BILBAO BIZKAIA DESIGN WEEK'23
DESCRIPTION:Are ecosystems designed and organized or do we let life unfold? How do we balance catering to what is emerging and what is planned? What is the role of the users and how can they get involved? \nThe BBDW (Bilbao Bizkaia Design Week) is the reference event in Euskadi around the design world. It is promoted by the Bilbao City Council and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia\, in collaboration with EIDE – Basque Design Association. \nBBDW is spending the biennium 2022-23 listening to and articulating the ECO-SYSTEM of design in Bilbao-Bizkaia. The 2022 edition focused on ECO\, on paying attention to the resonance of stakeholders’ voices and practices BBDW23 is now focusing on the idea of SYSTEM and proposes an exercise in strategic design and ecosystemic articulation\, a search for patterns\, adaptive action\, connections\, tensions\, and generative relationships. \n  \n\nF U R T H E R   I N F O R M A T I O N \nclick here

SUMMARY:Street Design Challenge 2023
DESCRIPTION:A two-day competition for university students to share their vision of how public space design can improve the quality of life in communities. \nThe Street Design Challenge is inspired by the need for climate action and is a call for UNESCO Creative Cities to participate in its third edition.
