SUMMARY:Créer Montréal action plan
DESCRIPTION:In April 2018\, Montréal mayor\, Valérie Plante\, presented the city’s 2018–2022 economic development strategy\, entitled Accélérer Montréal (accelerating Montréal)\, which comprises eight action plans\, including one for design: Créer Montréal (creating Montréal). Officially launched on May 30\, this three-year plan developed by Montréal’s Bureau du design provides for investments of $ 3.8 million spread over five major focuses of intervention. Emulating orientations that have made the city successful thus far and helped Montréal obtain and renew its status as a UNESCO City of Design\, the plan comes at an opportune moment. The time is ripe to accelerate the strategic and cross-disciplinary integration of design into all municipal practices. \nThe city stimulates creative design and promotes the reputation of Montréal designers both at home and abroad by pursuing a single objective – to use local design talent to enhance sustainable economic and urban development and create a first-rate environment throughout its territory. \nHighlights\nThe action plan’s key measure affirms the value placed on design quality: the Bureau du design will coordinate the development and implementation of an Agenda for Design and Architectural Quality (Agenda montréalais pour la qualité en design et en architecture). This collective effort will emphasize the importance of design as a factor in quality of life and assist communities\, the city\, and its boroughs in creating high-quality buildings and public spaces. It will also facilitate the development and maintenance of effective and efficient design processes. \nThe Bureau du design will support the development of the Montréal design market\, in particular by funding departments and boroughs in their own design projects that provide access to emerging designers. It will also invest in opportunities provided by the UNESCO Creative Cities Network by supporting the participation of Montréal designers. And it will help to develop specialized training courses aimed at enhancing the entrepreneurial skills of Montréal designers. \nThe Bureau du design will continue to guide different departments of both the city and its boroughs by training design champions and providing them with coaching tools and practical guides. It will also continue to promote the importance and impacts of design on quality of life by raising awareness and providing information about design and architectural issues among both the general public and city employees. \nRecall the Bureau du design’s mission:\n\nWork with designers to make the city better [design\, build].\nDevelop the market for Montréal designers and architects and promote their talent.\nProvide guidance for private and public design commissions.\n\nWe invite designers\, architects\, and other professionals in the field to meet with us and take part in consultative activities to develop the agenda for design and architectural quality. More details on the project will be forthcoming in the months ahead. To read the action plan Créer Montréal (French only here\, available in English soon). For further information see here. \n

SUMMARY:WORLD WIDE THINGS COLLECTION
DESCRIPTION:Where we develop a huge marketplace for the UNESCO Cities of Design.\nWhere we connect designers\, products\, manufacturers and distributors.\nWhere we collect great design from the Creative Cities Network. \n  \n  \n \n  \nThe WORLD WIDE THINGS COLLECTION is a worldwide marketplace for a fine selection of prime design products; additionally\, it comprises different formats such as exhibitions\, shops\, conferences\, meetings and conventions. In other words\, this collection acts as a “Hyperloop” as it displays products created in the UNESCO Cities of Design and moreover\, facilitates the dissemination of ideas\, designs and best practices. Last but not least\, the design products presented in the exhibitions are for sale. \nAbout\nThe project was developed by Anne Thomas (MTL)\, Pierre Laramée (MTL) and Eberhard Schrempf (GRZ) in 2017 and firstly launched as a pilot project within Designmonat Graz in May 2018. The curators’ vision is to create a channel\, of which both the creative community and the economy benefit. \nThis project is meant to visualize the diversity of good ideas and products and to utilize the potential for cooperation and exchange among the UNESCO Creative Cities Network; thus\, designers\, producers and retailers are provided the possibilities to display their products on a global platform and are connected with the creative community. \nExhibition\nThe first exhibition shows 53 products from Mexico City\, Montréal and Graz and was opened within Designmonat Graz 2018\, May 4\, at the Universal Museum Joanneum in Graz\, Austria. It will last until May 31. The exhibition design refers to the “Hyperloop” concept\, which enables trains to run quieter and smoother than conventional trains and at a much higher speed; the same is true for the design products: they are displayed smoothly and without friction on a table board and are shown in the exhibition as well as on this website here. The exhibition design is developed as open-source-material and therefore easy and quick to rebuild; moreover\, other UNESCO Cities of Design are invited to use this concept in order to set up a similar exhibition in their cities; the manual for the exhibition design is available on request. \nFinal Sale of Products: From May 27 until May 31 you’ll get a 15 % discount on each item bought. \nPhoto Gallery\n\n \n \n \n \n Opening Event of Designmonat Graz 2018 on May 4\, Photo: Jorj Konstantinov\n \n \n \n \n \n Exhibition to see at Joanneumsviertel\, Photo: Jorj Konstantinov\n \n \n \n \n \n Exhibition to see at Joanneumsviertel\, Photo: Jorj Konstantinov\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Philipp Podesser\n \n \n\n\nFor more information see here.

SUMMARY:Diagonale - Festival of Austrian Film
DESCRIPTION:The Diagonale is conceived as a forum for the presentation and discussion of Austrian cinematic production. The goal and task of the Diagonale is a nuanced\, multifaceted and critical exploration of Austrian cinema as well as drawing the industry into the media spotlight and thereby into public discourse. Accordingly\, it is the filmmakers and their works that lie at the heart of the festival\, which\, by means of a tailored program selection\, offers the rare opportunity to become acquainted with Austrian film in all its diversity\, to trace current artistic trends and\, to make some (re-) discoveries along the way. \nSome impressions\n\n \n \n \n \n © Diagonale Paul Pibernig\n \n \n \n \n \n Cinema Kiz Royal © Diagonale Miriam Raneburger\n \n \n \n \n \n Opening 2017 © Diagonale Alexi Pelekanos\n \n \n \n \n \n Cinema UCI © Diagonale Paul Pibernig\n \n \n \n \n \n Diagonale 2017 © Diagonale Paul Pibernig\n \n \n \n \n \n Cinema Kiz Royal © Diagonale Paul Pibernig\n \n \n \n \n \n © Diagonale Paul Pibernig\n \n \n \n \n \n Cinema Rechbauer © Diagonale Alexi Pelekanos\n \n \n \n \n \n Graz Clocktower © Diagonale Paul Pibernig\n \n \n\n\nProgram Structure\n\n\nThe Diagonale program structure is characterized by its diversity. Beginning with the Competition Program\, it draws from approximately 500 recent submissions and selects some outstanding films and documentaries\, as well as the best short films\, animations\, and experimental works and videos. Many of the productions from this feature will have their world premiere in Graz\, or their first showing in Austria. \n\nIn addition to the current selection\, the Retrospective presents feature-length Austrian films and documentaries that enjoyed regular cinematic releases during the last year. Further highlights include a Historical Program and Spotlight on\, which showcases the work of a particular Austrian filmmaker\, producer\, or screenwriter. The festival’s section In Reference\, discloses programmatic correspondences; here\, Austrian cinema enters into a filmic conversation with itself and selected international positions. The festival also shows European co-productions with Austrian participation\, highlighting Austria as a film-producing country in the international context. In addition\, the festival offers a comprehensive Supporting and Education Program\, consisting of talks and debates on cultural and political topics\, as well as exhibitions and workshops. \nAnd when it comes to celebrating cinema\, the festival never falls short. There are plenty of occasions to enjoy\, including the Opening Gala\, the presentation of awards for performance and screenplays\, numerous receptions\, as well as the parties and concerts of Durch die Nacht\, where stimulating festival days are celebrated late into the night. In the Award Ceremony\, the festival is brought to a close with Austria’s most prestigious film distinctions\, including the main prize for Best Austrian Feature and Best Austrian Documentary Film\, each offering 21\,000 Euros in prize money. \nText: © www.diagonale.at/en  \nFor more information see here.

DESCRIPTION:© Clara Wildberger \n  \nElevate is an annual interdisciplinary festival held in various central venues around the Schlossberg in Graz\, Austria. With its unique combination of critical political discourse and contemporary music and art\, the Elevate Festival stands out of the “usual” festival circus. SUMMARY:MODERNISM FOR THE FUTURE
DESCRIPTION:Kaunas Modernist and society \n  \n“Emotional attachment is one of the key aspects of heritage appreciation. We need to create emotional shock to wake up these places\, to create new stories and new ways of forging an emotional attachment”. Kaunas’ status as a temporary capital City (1919–1940) provoked a huge construction boom: government institutions\, museums\, educational institutions\, business offices\, hotels\, industrial territories\, housing\, etc. were built. The area of the City expanded by a factor of seven. More than 6\,000 buildings from this period survive until today. This process corresponds with huge changes in European and Global architecture. In the 1930s\, in a very short period of time\, the Modernist Movement became the de facto international style. The revolutionary seeds sown by Le Corbusier\, Walter Gropius\, Mies van der Rohe and other world-class architects and schools of architecture\, found fertile soil in dozens of places around the world. Unlike the public and civil purposes of other built heritage the Modernist Movement buildings are still inhabited by thousands of people in Kaunas. According to the architectural critic Wayne Attoe\, “Histories are constructed as sequences of deviant\, “progressive” building\,” who asks us to take a closer look at everyday spaces. \n\n\n\n\n\nA culturally\, emotionally and economically meaningful future of the Modernist Movement’s heritage is impossible without the consideration of everyday spaces. The status of European Capital of Culture in 2022 could be a powerful impulse for Kaunas to create a success story of its Modernist Movement inheritance\, examples of which Kaunas has in abundance. We have to build up the emotional attachment with our citizens. We have to empower small communities that already appreciate this heritage\, and to coordinate and accelerate this process. In 2018 20th century heritage interpretation and education centre “Modernism for the Future” is being established and is taking up this responsibility. The aim of the centre will be to act as a mediator between heritage and different groups of society (heritage communities and those of owners\, tourists\, citizens etc.)\, and set up a strategy for explaining\, interpreting and promoting the City’s modernism\, and the Modernist Movement in general.\n\n\nPlans and international events for 2018\n\n\n\n\n“Modernism for the European Year of Cultural Heritage” \n“Historic urban landscape of Modern Movement and value”: June 25–29\, 2018 \n“Forum of historic cities and sites of Modern Movement in East Europe”: September 11\, 2018 \nKaunas Conference “Modernism for the Future”: September 12–13\, 2018 \n\n  \n\n \n \n \n \n Kaunas Modernist and society © Renata Kilinskaite\n \n \n \n \n \n Principal Photo © Martinas Plepys\n \n \n\n\nFurther Information\n\n\n\n\nSee the website here. \nContact Person: Žilvinas Rinkšelis Mail: zilvinas@kaunas2022.eu \n\n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Architecture of Optimism: The Kaunas Phenomenon\, 1918–1940
DESCRIPTION:The modernist architecture of Kaunas is a reflection of the optimistic political\, social\, economic and cultural ideals of the 1920s and 1930s\, when Kaunas served as the provisional capital of the newly restored independent Republic of Lithuania. The city’s metamorphosis during this period was nothing short of a miracle. Kaunas radically changed its identity: in less than twenty years\, residents built more than 12\,000 buildings and transformed Kaunas into a modern\, elegant European capital city. After World War II and throughout the Soviet occupation that followed\, Kaunas’ heritage of pre-war modernist architecture served as a vivid memory of former statehood\, a symbolic window to the West\, and a benchmark for architectural excellence for Soviet-era architects. For Kaunas today\, that heritage has become the foundation of the city’s identity and an expression of its genius loci. This exhibition is more than just the story of one city. It speaks to the perpetual birth and collapse of dreams\, about creative endeavours and the appeal of rewarding optimism\, and about the migration\, locality and commonality of ideas and forms. \nDates\nOpening ceremony of the exhibition on February 14\, 6 p.m. at National Gallery of Art  at Vilnius\, Konstitucijos pr. 22 \nIn 2018 the exhibition travels to four other places: \n\nUNESCO HQ\, Paris:  April\, 4 – 9\nAuditorium Parco della Musica\, Rome: May\, 5 – 12\nEstonian National Library\, Tallinn: May\, 24 – June\, 16\nMuseum of Architecture\, Wroclaw: June\, 28 – October\, 16\n\nContact details and additional information:\nCurators of the exhibition: Ms. Marija Drėmaitė\, Ms. Giedrė Jankevičiūtė and Mr. Vaidas Petrulis.\nKaunas UNESCO City of Design: Ms. Andrijana Filinaitė. \nExhibition is organised by the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO and funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania. SUMMARY:Montreal’s Quartier des Spectacles launches an International Competition for interactive mapping projects
DESCRIPTION:Content\nCreators and artists working in all disciplines\, residing in Canada or abroad are invited to propose interactive mapping projects for the building façade next to Saint-Laurent metro station in the Quartier des Spectacles\, Montreal\, a site passed by thousands of people every day. \nMontreal’s cultural heart\, the Quartier des Spectacles\, showcases innovative projects from every video discipline. Its outdoor spaces are canvases for exploring and displaying new forms of work for urban public space. Several building façades in the Quartier des Spectacles are dedicated to architectural video projections. \nThe purpose of this competition is to explore\, in prototype form\, new approaches to interactivity using the façades. \nProcedure\nA first round of selections will be made based on preliminary concepts. Five semi-finalists will receive a $1\,500 CAD grant for developing a prototype for presentation to the jury and the general public during the MUTEK_IMG event in April\, 2018. Project leaders will also give a presentation on their creative approach\, as part of a conference on mapping. \nNext\, three finalists will be selected. They will receive a $3\,500 CAD grant and an invitation to a workshop with experts in the field\, to help advance their prototype toward presentation of an improved version during the MAPP_MTL festival in October 2018. Two $5\,000 CAD grand prizes will be awarded during that event: the Jury Prize and the Audience Award. The PQDS will enter into a licensing agreement with each finalist\, as follows: by accepting the $3\,500 CAD grant\, the finalist licences the PQDS to present the prototype produced for the Quartier des Spectacles at a later date\, without additional remuneration. Finalists will retain intellectual property rights in their prototype. In addition\, the PQDS will be granted the right of first refusal for the future development and production of a more complete version of the work. \nDeadline\nThe proposal must be submitted no later than Monday\, February 12\, 2018\, at noon. \nFurther Information\nTo know all criteria and how to submit\, see the call for proposals here. \nMore about the Quartier des Spectacles are to find here.

SUMMARY:Up Close. IS ARTI| Contemporary Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:The IŠ ARTI festival was born in 1997 out of the desire to promote the work of Kaunas-based composers and encourage relationships between Lithuanian musicians from different regions. Gradually\, the modest event grew into a solid annual showcase of modern music\, featuring more or less new symphonies\, dances\, psalms\, concertos\, rhapsodies\, suites\, conversations and lectureson history … \nAt present\, the idea of the IŠ ARTI festival is to get acquainted\, at close quarters\, with Lithuanian and foreign musical trends and processes\, which embrace local and foreign composers and performers of all generations. The initiators of Lithuanian premieres in the festival have been\, among others\, the violinist and conductor Vilhelmas Čepinskis\, the pianist Lina Krėpštaitė\, the Kaunas String Quartet\, the Kaunas City Symphony Orchestra\, and many performers from the capital city of Vilnius\, including solo performers\, chamber ensembles\, and the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra. Thanks to several years of collaboration with the Lithuanian Section of the International Society for Contemporary Music\, the IŠ ARTI festival has hosted such performers as the Tallinn String Quartet (Estonia)\, Antyphodes (Switzerland)\, the Stockholm Saxophone Quartet (Sweden)\, the Penderecki String Quartet and the Ergo Ensemble (Canada)\, Harmonies of the World (Ukraine)\, the Ebony Quartet (Belgium)\, the Amstel Quartet (Holland)\, and the Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble (Russia). The festival has featured many foreign composers\, including Peter Vasks (Latvia)\, the multi-instrumentalist Klaus Burger (Germany)\, the composer of electronic music Alvi Curran (USA)\, Bernd Franke (Germany)\, Oleg Paiberdin (Russia)\, Paul Dirmeikis (France)\, the creator of sound sculptures Hans van Koolwijk (Holland)\, the Slovenski tolkani project (Slovenia)\, and the KamerYouth Choir (Latvia). \nThe IŠ ARTI festival does not confine itself to elite music intended for a small circle of experts. On the contrary\, it strives to get closer to the listener\, composer and performer\, to attract audiences of various age groups and with different backgrounds\, and to help contemporary music listeners develop their musical tastes. Since the inception of the festival\, the organisers (the Kaunas Branch of the Lithuanian Composers Union and\, lately\, the IŠ ARTI Public Institution) havecarried out this mission with the help from the Kaunas State Philharmonic Society. \nFor more information click here.

SUMMARY:Torino Design of the City 2017
DESCRIPTION:Almost ten years have passed since Torino was nominated World Design Capital\, a recognition that is awarded every two years by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) and which has turned the spotlight on the city’s ability to recognize design as a factor of economic\, social and cultural growth. A virtuous path that started in 2008 and was consolidated in 2014 when Torino was\, uniquely in Italy\, awarded the title of UNESCO Creative City of Design. This has found confirmation this year with the choice of Torino as the venue for the World Design Organization’s (WDO)TM biennial convention. \nFollowing Seoul\, Helsinki\, Cape Town and Taipei\, the WDOTM (formerly the ICSID) – the international organization that promotes design – is choosing an Italian city to host the Thirtieth General Assembly on the 14 and 15 October involving its representatives from all over the world. Currently led by the Professor and Industrial Designer Mugendi M’Rithaa who\, in these days will pass on the presidency to the Piedmont Architect and Designer Luisa Bocchietto\, the World Design Organization (WDO)TM incorporates 140 organizations and is active in 60 countries and 6 continents worldwide. \nOn the occasion of Torino Design of the City from 10 to 16 October\, the City is promoting a week of events\, meetings\, workshops\, exhibitions and guided tours in the strategic places of the city that have experienced and are experiencing the phenomenon of urban regeneration\, such as Via Sacchi\, Cavallerizza\, Torino Incontra\, Lingotto Fiere\, BasicVillage\, Toolbox\, Hangar25\, Circolo del Design and Mastio della Cittadella. The focus of the event will then be the WDOTM General Assembly\, involving design professionals and peers from all over the world and which will take place at the ILO\, International Training Centre of Torino. \nThe Turin event was conceived with the aim of drawing the attention of citizens and national and international industry experts to contemporary design’s state-of-the-art and new trends and to recount how this discipline makes it is possible to intervene on a complex organism such as the city. Torino Design of the City is thus a stage to discuss the possibilities of innovation through design thinking applied to public policy with solutions of sustainable mobility and urban regeneration\, and by creating heterogeneous networks between people of a different vocation and nature. The extensive programme of events also intends to revitalise the Piedmont territory’s design\, creativity and production chain through the enhancement of existing heritage. \n\n\n\nTorino Design of the City is being organised through the joint effort of the Advisory Round Table of Design\, involving more than 30 public and private entities – including traders’ associations\, training institutes\, archives and museums – and a Steering Committee composed of the Deputy Mayor Guido Montanari and the Assessor for Culture Francesca Leon\, Assessor for Traffic Maria Lapietra\, Assessor for Education Federica Patti\, Assessor for Innovation Paola Pisano and Assessor for Trade Alberto Sacco. \nThe week of events is organised by Città di Torino with Fondazione per la Cultura Torino and Turismo Torino e Provincia\, with the support of the Compagnia di San Paolo\, the Fondazione Sviluppo e Crescita CRT\, the Chamber of Commerce of Turin\, the University of Turin\, the Politecnico di Torino\, and the ILO – International Labour Organization\, with the patronage of the Ministry of Heritage and Cultural Activities and the collaboration of World Design Organization (WDO). \nFor further information visit the website and download the programme.

SUMMARY:Seoul Design Week 2017
DESCRIPTION:The Seoul Design Foundation has been preparing many big events for this September and Seoul Design Week is one of them. DDP and some design related districts in the city center of Seoul are the main venues of SDW2017. \nThe main theme of Seoul Design Week 2017 is Design for Better Relationships. \nOpening\nAt the opening conference\, Japan’s Yamazaki Ryo\, a community designer as well as an architect\, delivered the keynote address introducing a design that develops the relationship between the residents and the village. He invigorated some backward areas by adopting “community design.” Pierre Fortin\, an urban designer\, introduced his story about transforming Montreal’s nightlife district into a public square\, while Simone Carena\, professor of IDAS\, introduced some examples of design enhancing the value of public spaces. \nThe guest speakers at the conference introduced cases of relational design and communicated with citizens\, giving their appraisals of Seoul and its design. \n“EP. age” was one of the programs prepared to support the design of young designers through audition. Seven teams of university students and start-up designers were mentored by senior designers for seven weeks\, after which they presented their ideas. Three presenters were awarded the mayor’s award\, SDF award and SDW award. \nThe second Seoul Smart Mobility International Conference was held at DDP Art Hall on September 26\, following up on last year’s successful exhibition and conference on smart mobility. The theme of this year’s conference was “Smart Mobilities gather in an eco-friendly sharing city\, Seoul.” \nJohn Thackara\, a senior research fellow of Great Britain’s Royal College of Art and the so-called “futurologist of the design world\,” attended the conference as a guest speaker\, giving keynote speech about mobility design in civil ecology. He also delivered a lecture about the economy of the future on September 27. \nDuring the Design Week period\, there were various educational programs for youths and students of design. The DDP hosted a presentation\, “Asian Colour Trend”\, suggested by Japanese design firm DIC; an international seminar on “Universal Design\,” a design that can be used easily and safely by all regardless of age or ability; and the Condé Nast X DDP workshop about branding\, event management and fashion media art direction. \n  \nCrafts Fair \nOther events and exhibits took place in DDP. The Seoul Crafts Fair\, held annually since 2015 to vitalizing the craft industry\, returned with a more private theme. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the display of Marcel Duchamp’s “Fountain\,” that the genius of which changed our perspective toward the toilet bowl\, SDF has organized this year’s fair on the theme of the toilet and bathroom. The fair showed us how elements that we use everyday in our bathroom can become beautiful works of art. Paying homage to Duchamp and of his modern art\, various artists and designers conceptually re-conceived the toilet and the bathroom in the modern sense\, too. \nThe most important message to the visitors of 2017 Seoul Design Week was that design is no longer something to just look at\, but something that is already with us in our daily lives. \n

SUMMARY:Kaunas Biennial
DESCRIPTION:The 11th Kaunas Biennial seeks to oppose monopolistically populist practice of removing-erecting and conservative traditionalism\, prevalent in the memory discourse of public art in Lithuania\, and to stimulate and legitimise radically new\, contemporary\, conceptual\, relevant ideas and strategies for monument-making\, inviting international and local artists to \n\n– look back at the removed\n– rethink the existing\n– imagine the future\n_                        MONUMENTS. \nWhen Lithuania broke free from the rule of the Soviet Union a quarter of the century ago\, it quickly got rid of all the monuments and sculptures that had anything to do with the communist ideology or Soviet occupation. Then\, with the same hastiness\, we rebuilt most of the national monuments that the Soviets had destroyed\, and erected some new ones\, yet of the same pre-WWII style and content. After paying that debt to the past we could hope for new public art to become more contemporary\, new monuments to be more suggestive\, and the remaining ideologically controversial or dated ones to be re-contextualised and acquire new meanings. However\, apart from the several successful but temporary public art projects\, a few abstract sculptures and a couple of less traditional monuments\, this didn’t catch on. In fact\, we are experiencing regression – in recent years the few remaining specimens of Soviet sculptural heritage were removed\, and there is also a rising urge to erect more bronze heroes that the new generation can hardly relate to. Even abstraction in monument projects is often regarded as insulting\, and there are demands to memorialise freedom by directly repeating not only romantic\, but also totalitarian tradition. And here\, in Kaunas\, in the totalitarian meat-grinder of the middle of the 20th century\, my grandfather as a young man\, together with 34\,000 other Jews\, vanished without a trace. I found his telephone number in an old directory. 25367. From this moment it is the Zahir. But what about the others? When you walk around Kaunas\, nothing reminds you that they all lived here\, that they were all murdered\, and why. But how to remember what is NOT THERE? How not to forget what is THERE? How to memorialise something you wish not to have been? And\, in the face of over-saturation\, what monuments do we really need?\n– Paulina Pukyte\, curator of the 11th Kaunas Biennial \nThe opening programme will include a two-day conference on 16-17th\, Sept.\, 2017 with invited speakers such as prof.
