SUMMARY:Helsinki Design Week 2018
DESCRIPTION:Helsinki Design Week is a multidisciplinary design festival that presents design from a number of fields as well as fashion\, architecture and urban culture. Held annually in September\, the festival programme contains around 250 events every year\, and boasted about 158\,000 visitors in 2016. Helsinki Design Week chairs World Design Weeks from 2017 to 2020. \nOne of the objectives of design is to question existing methods and to find new solutions. This creates order and usability\, not to mention good esthetics\, in our chaotic world. It’s not always easy to find new solutions. In addition to strong professional skills\, it takes vision and self-confidence. \nHelsinki Design Week is a cooperation platform for the design field and its audience. This platform is open and based on trust. We develop through interactive internationalization\, that is\, by working together as a network and trusting each other. It requires openness\, communication and cooperation skills. People are willing to share their thoughts and ideas only after they have gained trust in each other. \nThis year’s theme is TRUST!\nThe theme in 2018 for Helsinki Design Week is TRUST. The theme is topical because the sharing economy – the transition from individual ownership to collaborative consumption – is based on trust between humans. The transition of work\, increasing ways of telecommuting\, versatile networking and the digital service society are all built on mutual trust. \n  \n\n\n  \nHow has the design industry reacted to the change? How can we use design to enhance trust and transparency? What actions are needed to build trust? What new products\, services or events will be generated if designers bravely combine their forces? What does trust mean for design processes? \n\nAt Helsinki Design Week\, we trust in design’s ability to solve complex problems. We will showcase them next September throughout Helsinki in collaboration with designers and companies. If you want to participate\, and you want to have a (confidential) discussion with us\, please do contact Ms Moona Tikka\, Executive Producer (moona.tikka(at)helsinkidesignweek.com). \nThe largest design festival in the Nordics will be organized from 6 to 16 September 2018. An open call for the event will be launched in late winter 2018\, and the programme will be published in the summer of 2018. \n\nFor further information click here.

SUMMARY:Seoul Upcycling Plaza opens
DESCRIPTION:The Seoul Design Foundation(SDF) has been working on the biggest up-cycling hub in Korea\, the Seoul Upcycling Plaza(SUP). \nThe grand opening of SUP will be on September 5. \nThe spaces in SUP will be used in diverse ways including design shops\, exhibition hall\, co-working space\, lecture rooms\, studios and material bank. The resource recycling rate in Seoul is 66%\, that is the highest level in the world\, but it is simply “recycling.” \nDue to the increase of consumption\, people easily buy and dispose of things. However\, Seoul city felt the need of citizen’s consciousness about up-cycling to increase the resource value (high-value recycling)\, Upcycling is a new way of circulating the resources and protecting the environment by considering its value after it has lost its original use. Upcycling helps us to care about the environment and nature and also to think more when making things at first. \nThe SUP will increase awareness of the resource circulation through various programs such as citizen participating events\, up-cycling experience tour\, upcycling cultural festival and by doing that\, citizens and tourists can see\, experience and learn all about up-cycling. \n  \nⓒ Seoul Design Foundation \n\nFurther Information\nVisit the official website here www.seouldesign.or.kr \n

SUMMARY:A Modernist’s Guide to Kaunas
DESCRIPTION:“Modernist’s Guide” is the newest route in the “It’s Kaunastic” series. Kaunas dedicated both it and “Wallographer’s Notes” to the city as UNESCO Creative City of Design. Love modernist architecture? The city hopes you’ve already put Kaunas on your destination list! An English-language map of the most important buildings of the Epoque will be waiting upon your arrival. The city was awarded the title in 2015; the main reason for that was the modernist architecture of the interwar period which itself is currently included UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List. \nKaunas – which will become the European Capital of Culture in 2022 – is increasingly focusing on its history that usually hides in the plain sight. “Modernist’s Guide” will make the acquaintance easier and direct you to further contacts. \nModernist’s Guide\, Kaunas\, Photo: Kaunas IN\, 2018 \nFurther Information\nThe digital copy of Modernist’s Guide is available in English here. \nFor any further questions get in contact with Andrijana Filinaité\, Kaunas City Municipal Administration\, Chief specialist of Cultural Heritage Division\, via email

SUMMARY:The Last Master of Joseon
DESCRIPTION:The Last Master of Joseon: Jang Seung Eop Chihwaseon Special Exhibition\nThis exhibition features over 60 works by Jang Seung Eop\, a master artist of the Joseon Dynasty\, owned by the Gansong Art Museum. Known for his free-wheeling lifestyle\, Jang is renowned as the “last genius painter” of the Joseon Dynasty. \nThis exhibition aims to explore the origin of contemporary Korean painting. His paintings are the combined result of various factors beyond his artistic genius\, that is: his passion for artistic creation even amid the chaotic social environment of the Joseon Dynasty’s final years\, the fact that his thoughts and actions did not conform to the established mores of the time\, and his love of alcohol (which was so great that Jang often refused to paint while sober). To get a better idea of what Korea was like in Jang’s time\, visitors can view scenes from the movie Chihwaseon\, a biopic on Jang Seung Eop\, which will also help them gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for Jang’s paintings. \nFurther Information\nSee the official website here. \nPhoto Gallery\n\n \n \n \n \n SEOUL_The Last Master of Joseon exhibit © Seoul Design Foundation\n \n \n \n \n \n SEOUL_The Last Master of Joseon exhibit © Seoul Design Foundation\n \n \n \n \n \n SEOUL_The Last Master of Joseon exhibit © Seoul Design Foundation\n \n \n \n \n \n SEOUL_The Last Master of Joseon exhibit © Seoul Design Foundation\n \n \n \n \n \n SEOUL_The Last Master of Joseon exhibit © Seoul Design Foundation

SUMMARY:The Kaunas Street Art Map
DESCRIPTION:There’s no such word as “wallographer” you say? True\, but how else should we call the observer of street art\, graffiti\, neo-frescoes\, site-specific artwork and other traces of art that can be found outside museum or gallery walls? With a new release in the “It’s Kaunastic” series\, the city invites you to become the wallographers of Kaunas and to embark on a never-ending tour – by the time you reach the final point of your walk\, new detail will have emerged\, and you will definitely want to snap a picture. It is also likely that one of the artworks included in the guide will have run its course. That’s why the walls and streets of Kaunas (in addition to drawings\, the guide contains a few sculptures and other objects that are integral to the city) are remarkable – they never sleep\, they don’t complain\, demand or declare. They live.
Wallographer’s Notes is paired with Modernist’s Guide\, a map of the modernist architecture of Kaunas – a dedication to Kaunas UNESCO Creative City of Design. \nFurther Information\nThe digital copy is available in English hereWallographers-notes-EN-WEB2. \nFor any further questions get in contact with ANDRIJANA FILINAITĖ\,Kaunas City Municipal Administration\, Chief specialist of Cultural Heritage Division\, via email \n  \n\n \n \n \n \n Wallographer’s Notes (map)\, Photo: Kaunas IN\, 2018\n \n \n \n \n \n Wallographer’s Notes\, Photo: Kaunas IN\, 2018\n \n \n\n

SUMMARY:PLAY Kortrijk
DESCRIPTION:PLAY is a headstrong city festival from 23 June to 11 November 2018\, that will take over the centre of Kortrijk with contemporary works of art. \nYou can immerse yourself in the unique world of national and international visual art at diverse indoor and outdoor locations in the city. During PLAY\, the city not only serves as a canvas; bit by bitt he festival simultaneously dissects our relationship with `play`. How does play influence our social behaviour? How does `play`reflect the evolution of our society? How important is play for our motor and cognitive development? \nKortrijk is a playground and home for creative talent and is also a quality player in the Belgian cultural and arts landscape. A city with a generous dose of daring\, sense of creative entrepreneurship and above all\, the (play)room to experiment. \nKORTRIJK\, PLAYGROUND FOR CREATIVE TALENT \nKortrijk is growing\, flourishing and above all\, does not stand still. And it is precisely this continuous urban metamorphosis that makes the West Flanders city the dream décor for PLAY. Not only a breeding ground for regional\, national and international talent\, but also a springboard that offers opportunities. This unexpected creative melting pot carefully connects different disciplines such as art\, design\, education and entrepreneurship. In November 2017\, Kortrijk became a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network\, a collection of 180 world cities that use creativity as a lever for sustainable development. A year earlier\, Kortrijk was officially named a child and youth-friendly city. In order to obtain this label\, the city – together with local young people – completed an intensive participatory process that examined what child and youth-friendly Kortrijk needed. What’s more Kortrijk was chosen as European City of Sport 2018\, thanks to the impressive range of sports it offers\, the quality sports events it hosts and its large number of sports clubs. Kortrijk is a playground and home for creative talent and is also a quality player in the Belgian cultural and arts landscape. A city with a generous dose of daring\, sense of creative entrepreneurship and above all\, the (play)room to experiment. \nREDISCOVER YOUR CITY \nPLAY consists of more than 40 indoor and outdoor installations by national and international artists interested in the interactive aspect of art and the relationship between an artwork and the observer\, the space and urban developments. The city festival offers unique artistic experiences that give visitors the opportunity to reflect on their personal actions and to view human behaviour in a different light. The artists use humour and play to focus our attention on diverse social codes and subjective ideas about human behaviour. In recent years\, the boundary between art and urban planning has blurred: both contribute to a positive transformation of the public space using play\, involvement and citizens’ participation. PLAY encourages visitors to discover\, or rediscover\, Kortrijk and demonstrates how the urban environment plays a leading role in our daily lives. \nINTERACTIVE ART ROUTE \nPLAY consists of an art route of installations with a powerful visual impact\, many of which are also interactive. The aim is for the exhibition visitor to cast off his/her role of passive spectator and to share in an intense experience as a co-actor/ co-author/co-pilot. Visitors can also enjoy a selection of documentary films that examine the ‘play’ phenomenon from a humanist and scientific perspective. \nFurther information\nGet in contact here\nPress contact here \nINFO POINTS\nTexture\, Noordstraat 28\, 8500 Kortrijk\n1302\, Begijnhof\, 8500 Kortrijk\nMuziekcentrum Track\, Conservatoriumplein\, 8500 Kortrijk \nPhoto Gallery\n\n \n \n \n \n Modified Soccer Bench\, Photo: Jeppe Hein\n \n \n \n \n \n I am prepared for you\, Photo: Markus Sixay\n \n \n \n \n \n When all the world is hopeless jumble\n \n \n \n \n \n Soccer Pitch \n \n \n \n \n \n Soccer Pitch \n \n \n \n \n \n Soccer Pitch

The designs are made using recycled Nespresso coffee capsules. \n2. Jimmy Junichi (United Kingdom)\, best accessory designer \nThis collection of “Reconstruction” is intended to redesign classic shoes with new construction methods but keeping traditional craftsmanship. Traditional wools used in classical tailoring\, two-tone iridiscent rayon linings\, jaquard designs as well as shirtmaker’s silk in printed and bold colours compose the fabric range. \nExhibition\nThe exhibition is designed by Zorrozua y Asociados\, and will be held at Azkuna Zentroa. \nThe contest is nowadays the flagship of a global platform for emerging talents of fashion design\, and it aspires to create an innovative breeding ground for creative fashion entrepreneurs in Bilbao. SUMMARY:LAB.2030 Design Action.bdg
DESCRIPTION:LAB.2030 | Design Action.bdg: Fostering the Creation of Innovative Ideas for Social Development\n  \n\nThe Bandung Creative City Forum (BCCF) is a collaborative-hub facilitating the exchange of creative ideas and knowledge\, aimed at encouraging entrepreneurial initiatives and promoting the creative sector within Bandung. This independent group of volunteers is a catalyst for generating low-cost\, effective improvements and urban solutions for local issues. \nWorkshop Design.Action.bdg\nFor the last 5 years\, the BCCF has supported and organised a variety of social-advancement initiatives\, working with residents to develop their areas in order to generate economic growth and improved communal facilities. Due to the success of the BCCF approach to social and environmental change\, the team now holds an annual workshop called Design Action.bdg. This collaborative opportunity allows creative minds to generate innovative ways to solve issues within the municipality. In consolidation with ‘design thinking’ the BCCF believes in action – Design Action. Their goal is to use ideas to create prototypes for potential solutions. \nFunded by the city and other private sponsorships\, the event gains national and international interest\, and has successfully inspired other cities to set up similar initiatives. As well as addressing urban issues\, the event offers a stage for social equality due to the large number of female and young participants. The workshop has successfully encouraged local government to make improvements to social services and facilities\, as well as focus their attention on the need for environmental sustainability measures.

SUMMARY:Créer Montréal action plan
DESCRIPTION:In April 2018\, Montréal mayor\, Valérie Plante\, presented the city’s 2018–2022 economic development strategy\, entitled Accélérer Montréal (accelerating Montréal)\, which comprises eight action plans\, including one for design: Créer Montréal (creating Montréal). Officially launched on May 30\, this three-year plan developed by Montréal’s Bureau du design provides for investments of $ 3.8 million spread over five major focuses of intervention. Emulating orientations that have made the city successful thus far and helped Montréal obtain and renew its status as a UNESCO City of Design\, the plan comes at an opportune moment. The time is ripe to accelerate the strategic and cross-disciplinary integration of design into all municipal practices. \nThe city stimulates creative design and promotes the reputation of Montréal designers both at home and abroad by pursuing a single objective – to use local design talent to enhance sustainable economic and urban development and create a first-rate environment throughout its territory. \nHighlights\nThe action plan’s key measure affirms the value placed on design quality: the Bureau du design will coordinate the development and implementation of an Agenda for Design and Architectural Quality (Agenda montréalais pour la qualité en design et en architecture). This collective effort will emphasize the importance of design as a factor in quality of life and assist communities\, the city\, and its boroughs in creating high-quality buildings and public spaces. It will also facilitate the development and maintenance of effective and efficient design processes. \nThe Bureau du design will support the development of the Montréal design market\, in particular by funding departments and boroughs in their own design projects that provide access to emerging designers. It will also invest in opportunities provided by the UNESCO Creative Cities Network by supporting the participation of Montréal designers. And it will help to develop specialized training courses aimed at enhancing the entrepreneurial skills of Montréal designers. \nThe Bureau du design will continue to guide different departments of both the city and its boroughs by training design champions and providing them with coaching tools and practical guides. It will also continue to promote the importance and impacts of design on quality of life by raising awareness and providing information about design and architectural issues among both the general public and city employees. \nRecall the Bureau du design’s mission:\n\nWork with designers to make the city better [design\, build].\nDevelop the market for Montréal designers and architects and promote their talent.\nProvide guidance for private and public design commissions.\n\nWe invite designers\, architects\, and other professionals in the field to meet with us and take part in consultative activities to develop the agenda for design and architectural quality. More details on the project will be forthcoming in the months ahead. To read the action plan Créer Montréal (French only here\, available in English soon). For further information see here. \n

SUMMARY:Shaping Human Cities
DESCRIPTION:Urban experiments from eleven European cities conceptualized and realized by designers\, initiatives\, activists\, students and residents are open for discussion. In an interactive exhibition the possibilities and challenges of getting involved are to be discovered. Why do we feel comfortable or uncomfortable in a city? What makes a city our city? \nThe exhibition SHAPING HUMAN CITIES was designed by students of the Master’s programme Exhibition Design at the University of Applied Sciences\, FH JOANNEUM and from 5 May to 24 June 2018 urban experiments are presented\, which took place within the framework of the Human Cities Project in these cities. Interactive stations are installed in the GrazMuseum where the experiments can be experienced in a playful way. \nOne of them is LET´S TAKE ACTION.\nIt gives tips on how to become active in your own urban environment and thereby improve the urban space. \nWANNA PLAY?\nConsists of eleven miniature golf courses that invite you to play.
