SUMMARY:Exhibition: World Wide Things Collection
DESCRIPTION:The World Wide Things Collection (WWTC) collects great design from the UNESCO Creative Cities Network\, connects great designers\, products\, manufacturers and distributors\, and develops a great marketplace for the UNESCO Cities of Design. The Project The World Wide Things Collection is a worldwide marketplace for carefully selected design products. This growing selection is presented in different formats such as exhibitions\, shops\, conferences\, meetings\, conventions and online. The collection acts literally as “Hyperloop” as it displays products created in the UNESCO Cities of Design and moreover\, facilitates the exchange of ideas\, designs and best practices. All design products presented in the collection can be bought through online shops. \nAbout \nThe project was developed by Anne Thomas (Montréal)\, Pierre Laramée (Montréal) and Eberhard Schrempf (Graz) in 2017 and firstly launched as a pilot project within Design Month Graz 2018. The curators’ vision is to create a channel\, of which both\, the creative community and the economy\, benefit. The project is meant to visualize the diversity of good ideas and products and to utilize the potential for cooperation and exchange among the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. Designers\, producers and retailers are given the possibility to display their products on a global platform and are interconnected within the creative community. \n2 Exhibitions so far – 2018 and 2019\n\nThe first exhibition of World Wide Things Collection in 2018 showed about 50 products from three UNESCO Cities of Design. In 2019 the exhibition will be part of Design Month Graz 2019 from May 10 to June 9\, 2019 and will display about 120 products from seven UNESCO Cities of Design: Detroit\, Graz\, Istanbul\, Mexico City\, Puebla\, Saint-Etienne and Singapur. The exhibition design refers to the “Hyperloop” concept\, a high-speed transportation system. The products are displayed on a seemingly endless table board\, that winds smoothly through the showroom. The exhibition design is developed as open-source-concept that is easy to rebuild\, so each UNESCO Cities of Design is invited to set up a similar exhibition. The handy manual for the exhibition design is available on request \n  \nFurther Information \nSee each object in detail here. \n  \nPhoto Gallery \n  \n  \n\n \n \n \n \n Photo: Miriam Raneburger\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Miriam Raneburger\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Miriam Raneburger\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Miriam Raneburger\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Miriam Raneburger\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Miriam Raneburger\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Miriam Raneburger\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Miriam Raneburger\n \n \n \n \n \n Photo: Miriam Raneburger

SUMMARY:ICO-D SPECIAL MEETING
DESCRIPTION:The international Council of Design (ico-D) is the world’s largest representative of the international community of professional designers\, composed of national design associations and design education institutions. ico-D was founded in London in 1963 and has been based in Montréal since 2005. It is a global professional design organization with more than 140 organizations in 67 countries and regions\, including national professional associations\, educational institutions and funding agencies. As a member-based network of independent organizations and stakeholders working in the multidisciplinary design field\, it promotes the value of design practice\, education\, research and policy. \nAnnual Special Meetings\nSince 2017\, special meetings are held annually. The Special Meeting fosters collaboration and exchange between
the international community of professional designers—the ico-D Membership—and these various promotion and valorisation entities to address overlapping challenges and objectives. Through networking and cooperation\, participants are able to more efficiently utilise resources. ico-D believes in the importance of strengthening the international design community by supporting inter-entity knowledge transfer and collaboration. \nIn 2019\, Creative Industries Styria and Graz as a UNESCO City of Design hosts this special meeting. This year\, too\, the international design community strengthened supports knowledge transfer and cooperation between the entities. \n\nDetails\nIt’s Special. It’s a Meeting: The International Council of Design’s “Special Meeting” challenges Design Weeks and Biennales\, Design Museums and Design Cities from across the planet to come up with new ways to use design to better our lives. \nWhile designers across the globe are focusing on their upcoming projects\, managing clients and keeping up with what’s new and interesting in the world\, there are hundreds of dedicated organisations that are working behind the scenes to support them. These organisations strive to push the profession forward by increasing awareness among the design community\, by educating policymakers and governments\, and by creating networks and advocacy platforms among designers to leverage their reach and power. The global design landscape is vibrant and varied. \nAbout ico-D\nThe International Council of Design (ico-D) is one such organisation. Founded in 1963 as Icograda (the International Council of Graphic Design Associations)\, the Council came into being at a time when the UN model — the idea of country representatives gathering to create an international body according to common objectives — was new and exciting. With a Member base of Professional Associations\, Educational institutions and Promotional bodies\, \nico-D now represents 120 different organisations in 55 different countries. The Council is a connecting and coordinating force for design organisations to leverage their expertise\, resources and clout. The Council covers subjects like the professionalisation of design practice\, the aspects of education that touch specifically on training design professionals—not “designing”\, i.e. the CAD work and sketching—but by providing guidelines for professional ethics and notions around the role of the designer in the world\, and consolidating this role into a collective voice of design in order to better communicate with governments and other fields. \nAs the design industry evolved and became more complex\, so did the multiple voices of design. The International Council of Design realised the importance of connecting with other emerging entities\, and in 2017\, a first effort to gather non-Member type organisations: Design Weeks and Biennales\, Design Museums and Design Cities\, began to take shape. A meeting in Montréal kicked-off the initiative\, which was dubbed — for simplicity’s sake—the “Special Meeting”. \nWhat is a ‘Special Meeting’?\n“We created the Special Meeting when we noticed all the informal ways that people were talking to each other about issues and the future of design. Real work and networking was happening among people in their own cities\, at Design Weeks\, and in the off-hours at Design Biennales\, Museum openings\, and so on. The question became: What can take root when an international body helps these smaller\, grassroots bodies get together in a more formal setting? This hadn’t been done before\, and we felt there was a missing link in the chain of conversation happening between conventional institutions like museums and local design initiatives like Design Weeks\, happening in countries like India\, Lebanon and South Africa”\, states Communications Officer Alisha Piercy. \nThe first pilot meeting brought together representatives from 15 organisations from ten different countries. “The result was a ‘formal\, but loose’ meeting of organisations working in a productive\, energetic way\, who otherwise\, were unlikely to have met. The Special Meeting format gave valuable space for these design entities to share successful programmes they had achieved\, as well as outline experiences and best practices they hoped to pass on to others”\, according to Piercy. The success of the one-day meeting in Montréal led to a second meeting in China in September 2018 in partnership with Beijing Design Week\, the world’s most trafficked design week with an annual footfall of 8 million participants. \nThe Montréal and Beijing meetings stimulated discussion around things like: Where is design headed? How do we bridge the gap between design and industry? How do local initiatives gain foothold with their governments? How do you put a smaller city on the global design map? \nSpecial Meeting sessions presented local models with ambitious adaptive strategies: Beirut Design Week discussed rebuilding the image of Beirut and people’s perception of the city after years of appearing in the news cycle as a war-torn city. Nagoya UNESCO City of Design shared management and preservation strategies developed for integrating Japanese cultural heritage with contemporary design as well as the ways in which the city’s history was incorporated in the modern manufacturing sector. Puebla UNESCO City of Design questioned the very role of design in government\, proposing a model for design embedded in government infrastructure\, while the Moscow Design Museum presented a survival guide for museums creatively overcoming funding problems\, or even “homelessness”. \nOn May 09–11\, 2019\, the International Council of Design organises a Special Meeting during Graz Design Month\, hosted by Creative Industries Styria and once again partnering with Beijing Design Week. Topics of discussion range from the philosophical\, How can we collaborate to implement fundamental change? to the actual\, Women and Design to the practical\, Connecting the design community to business\, government\, the public. In addition to lively debate\, it is expected that participants will build tools to work better with the resources they have at hand\, and by creating international networks to transfer know-how and collaborate on joint projects. \nList of Attendees of the Special Meeting 2019 in Graz\n\n\n\nLuis Gonzalez\nArenal\nPuebla UNESCO City of Design\n\n\nEmanuel\nBarbosa\nPorto Design Biennale\n\n\nMary Josephine\nCruz\nDesign Week Philippines\n\n\nLuis Rodrigo Gonzalez\nDeleze\nPuebla UNESCO City of Design\n\n\nSertaç\nErsayin\nIstanbul UNESCO City of Design\n\n\nÁlvaro Rego\nGarcía de Alba\nMUMEDI Museo Mexicano del Diseño\n\n\nNino\nGroß\nFifteen Seconds Festival\n\n\nAdrian\nJankowiak\nNairobi Design Week\n\n\nArhan\nKayar\nIstanbul Design Week\n\n\nUrška\nKrivograd\nBIO Biennial of Design Ljubljana\n\n\nDara\nLynch\nDesign & Art Directors Festival\n\n\nLi Dan\nMin Wang\nBeijing Design Week\n\n\nMichał\nPiernikowski\nLodz Design Festival\n\n\nLukáš\nPipek\nCzech Design Week\n\n\nDaniela\nPiscitelli\nAiap Women in Design Award\n\n\nJan\nRajlich\nBrno Biennale Association\n\n\nGabriel\nRoland\nVienna Design Week\n\n\nAlexandra\nSankova\nMoscow Design Museum\n\n\nRaman\nSaxena\nDelhi Design Festival\n\n\nEberhard\nSchrempf\nGraz UNESCO City of Design\n\n\nDiana\nSolis\nMUMEDI Museo Mexicano del Diseño\n\n\nDoreen\nToutikian\nBeirut Design Week\n\n\nIsabelle\nVerilhac\nSaint-Étienne UNESCO City of Design\n\n\nCamille\nVilain\nSaint-Étienne UNESCO City of Design\n\n\nMin\nWang\nBeijing Design Week\n\n\nAnja\nZorko\nBIO Biennial of Design Ljubljana\n\n\n\n  \n  \n  \nFurther Information\nThe Special Meeting is a symposium which is not open to the public. \nSee the official website – www.ico-d.org \nico-D Special Meeting 2019\nMay 10–11\, 2019\nAuditorium | Joanneumsviertel Graz\, Austria \nPhoto Gallery\n\n \n \n \n \n ico-D special meeting 2019\, Graz\, Photo: Alisha Piercy\n \n \n \n \n \n ico-D special meeting 2019\, Graz\, Photo: Alisha Piercy\n \n \n \n \n \n ico-D special meeting 2019\, Graz\, Photo: Alisha Piercy\n \n \n \n \n \n ico-D special meeting 2019\, Graz\, Photo: Alisha Piercy\n \n \n \n \n \n ico-D special meeting 2019\, Graz\, Photo: Alisha Piercy\n \n \n \n \n \n ico-D special meeting 2019\, Graz\, Photo: Alisha Piercy\n \n \n \n \n \n ico-D special meeting 2019\, Graz\, Photo: Alisha Piercy\n \n \n \n \n \n ico-D special meeting 2019\, Graz\, Photo: Alisha Piercy\n \n \n \n \n \n ico-D special meeting 2019\, Graz\, Photo: Alisha Piercy\n \n \n \n \n \n ico-D special meeting 2019\, Graz\, Photo: Alisha Piercy\n \n \n \n \n \n ico-D special meeting 2019\, Graz\, Photo: Alisha Piercy\n \n \n \n \n \n ico-D special meeting 2019\, Graz\, Photo: Alisha Piercy\n \n \n \n \n \n ico-D special meeting 2019\, Graz\, Photo: Alisha Piercy

SUMMARY:Bilbao Art District 2019
DESCRIPTION:PROGRAMME OF ACTIVITIES\nBilbao Art District (BiAD) is an initiative promoted by Bilbao City Council\, through Bilbao Ekintza. The aim is to give value to and support the activity it develops from the city’s artistic and cultural network\, and to foster its competitiveness as a strategic element in its development and projection towards the future. The project assumes a special nature as it is a public and private collaboration\, in which different representatives from the city’s visual arts world participate together. These include Bilbao Arte\, art producers\, galleries\, and the Faculty of Fine Arts of the UPV-EHU.) \nAlthough the project continues throughout the year\, a special programme involving the city’s arts and cultural sector is being held in May\, and is open to the public. \nFocus on Visual Arts\nThe BiAD 2019 edition will focus on reflecting on\, fostering and asserting the value (economic\, social\, cultural…) generated by the visual arts. As part of an evolving process with interlinked crises\, BiAD 2019 aims to raise awareness of these values as an essential asset for generating areas of shared experience in the city and for encouraging and promoting experimentation\, imagination and investigation as a creative\, productive and innovative force. \nBilbao is defined as a city of values. Historically\, visual arts have placed a decisive role in moments of crisis for envisaging a new sensitivity\, fulfilling a function of experimental innovation\, then spreading to all areas\, both social and economic. As a result\, they not only represent a cultural value but are also a driving force for integral development. \nEconomy and culture are concepts that cannot be appreciated as if referring to independent closed spheres. Artistic creation is far more than a cultural asset: it is our way of being represented and of representing ourselves\, a means of expression and communication\, and a specific form of knowledge which directly influences thought\, individual and collective development\, and the creation of wealth. \nThis edition of Bilbao Art District 2019 aims to specify and take a closer look at the value of art in this multiple dimension. \nIn this respect\, initiatives have been chosen that continue after May and that\, in some way\, help to improve the competitiveness of the sector\, such as its internationalisation or communication. To achieve this goal\, in addition to the curatorships of artist MawaTres and researcher Andrea Estankona\, the initiative has had the collaboration of three strategic partners: These are the Faculty of Fine Arts of the UPV-EHU\, Bilbao Arte and Azkuna Zentroa-Alhóndiga Bilbao\, as well as the participation of more than 25 representatives from the city’s visual arts world. \nProjects\nTwo examples of projects which have this effect on the economic development include “What are the artists thinking about? South-south-north dialogues to turn the world around” by Saray Pérez Castilla and Miriam Rodríguez Morán\, and “LUTITEKA” by Tunipanea. The former is a continuation of a dialogue already started\, which seeks the internationalisation of the project\, while also taking it to the public through a graphic display which will be exhibited on La Merced and La Ribera bridges\, in combination with a series of talks to be held at the Sala Rekalde on 8 May. LUTITEKA is the pilot test of a project that has been nine years in the making\, and which aims to test whether it would be feasible to introduce it continuously. There will be a display of more than 100 experimental musical instruments created by the artist Tunipanea. Many of these are made from recycled materials found in the streets of Bilbao; thus the value of the project lies in the opportunity for the public to borrow an instrument or take part in a creative workshop; at the same time\, other artists will give a live performance of experimental pieces of music created from these instruments. \nThe “Meetings between curators and artists” has been set up along the same lines and is part of the collaboration between Bilbao Art District and BilbaoArte. These are considered as seminars which contribute to the professional development of the artists of Bilbao\, based on portfolio presentations and visits to studios; and with a public presentation which will discuss this edition’s theme\, the values generated by artistic practices from the perspective of curatorship. In addition\, the “We need to create contexts to think differently” seminars stemmimg from collaboration with Azkuna Zentroa-Alhóndiga Bilbao\, are considered as a day of critical thinking\, reflection and discussion about the values of artistic practices. BiAD 2019 aims to raise awareness of these values as an essential asset for generating areas of shared experience in the city and for encouraging and promoting experimentation\, imagination and investigation as a creative\, productive and innovative force. \nVisit galleries on May 11\nIn addition\, in order to attract new audiences for the city’s galleries\, El Día de la Galería (Gallery Day) has been organised for 11 May. Following a guided visit around all the galleries\, participants are offered lunch\, and one or more pieces will be selected for acquisition by Bilbao Art District. An educational talk on art will also be offered at the same time. \nSolasparkea and Herritarrar Ekologikoak are proposed as Walks and collective actions in conversation with the different material aspects of Doña Casilda Park and dramatised guided tours through non-native species of trees\, respectively. \nProject “Follow the leaders” from May 2–19\nIn addition to some of the above interventions\, of special interest is the project Follow the leaders by the artist\, Isaac Cordal. This will be on display at the Atrio de las Culturas at Azkuna Zentroa from 2 to 19 May\, or the intervention Sounds\, performed by the Association of Watercolourists on Saturday 4 May. As in other editions\, students from the Faculty of Fine Arts will create artistic interventions in different areas of the city. These include the intervention created thanks to the collaboration of Containers Aurtenetxea and the Ría de Bilbao Maritime Museum. \nSeveral other activities in May 2019\nOn top of this programme there are a number of special activities conducted by the representatives of the city. For example\, on 17 May\, the Vanguardia Gallery will screen the award-winning documentary\, Izaro\, after which there will be a symposium with the creator\, Txuspo Poyo. At the same time\, talks and encounters will be organised with artists and curators including Luca Gerardo\, researcher from the Basque Centre for Applied Mathematics at Spazio Ranieri (10 May)\, recording artist Usoa Zumeta at Juan Manuel Lumbreras Gallery (9 May)\, Pako Pimienta at the Contemporary Photography Centre(10 May)\, and curator Jesús Alcaide and artist Eduardo Hurtado at Aldama Fabre Gallery (11 May). \nThe closure is on 11 May in the afternoon at the Tinglados del Arenal\, where the artist collective Fat Combo and Caostica will create an audiovisual intervention in an installation called “Urban Primitive Art”. Here they will create two live pieces of graffiti accompanied by live music and visual interventions from VJ Anisakis. \nFurther Information\nSee the official website here \nFollow on facebook\, twitter or instragram. \nDownload the program here \nReview\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou are currently viewing a placeholder content from YouTube. SUMMARY:Great Rivers Forum
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the long history of humanity\, rivers have always been recognized as the “cradles of human civilization”. Meandering through time and place\, the great rivers also witness the evolution of human society. Today\, large cities with growing population develop vibrantly along major rivers such as the Nile River\, the Tigris-Euphrates Rivers\, the Indus River\, the Ganges River\, the Changjiang River\, the Yellow River\, the Rhine River\, the Danube River\, the Volga River\, the Amazon River and the Mississippi River\, etc. As the society progress\, we become more aware of the significance of the great rivers and the need to explore better ways to co-exist with the rivers in the spirit of sustainable development. \nThe Great Rivers Forum is a biannual event that serves as an international platform for dialogues among experts and managers from various disciplines and origins\, anchored in the values promoted by the 2001 UNESCO Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity. The forum offers a unique opportunity for participants to exchange ideas and share experiences. The engagement in this cooperative efforts of sister cities and UNESCO networks – including World Heritage sites\, Creative Cities and Biosphere Reserves\, and also Ecohydrology demosites – contributes to boosting high-quality development along great rivers\, paying particular attention to their ecological and cultural environment. Moreover\, participants and partners have the opportunity to explore the roles that great river civilizations play in working towards a more sustainable world\, leaving no one behind. \n\nFurther Information\nGreat Rivers Forum official website \nContact Details\nThe Changjiang Civilization Museum\nAdd: 8 East Rd.\, Garden Expo Park\, Wuhan\, 430010\, P.R.China.\nT: +86 27 83696278 \n

SUMMARY:Street Art Meets Public Transport in Kaunas
DESCRIPTION:Do you know what Kaunas and San Francisco have in common? Trolleybuses! Street art\, too. The electric public transport has been circling around our city for more than 60 years now. Recently Kaunas City Municipality signed a deal with a Polish company ‘Solaris Bus& Coach S.A.’ that’ll deliver 85 brand new ‘Solaris Trollino 12’ trolleybuses by autumn of 2019. What does this mean for the vintage Škoda trolleybuses? Time will tell\, but before they’re all taken for a final ride\, the trolleybuses will be used as outdoor street art galleries. \n  \nThe first street art trolleybuses have already hit the streets. Inspired by the iconic murals of Kaunas\, The Pink Elephant\, The Old Wise Man\, Kaunas 2022 and Modernist Architecture the illustrations were done by Eglė Zubkovienė\, Tadas Bujanauskas and Morfai\, one of the best-known street artists in Kaunas. A new mobile piece of street art should be presented every few weeks. More artists will be invited to collaborate in the entirely kaunastic project. \n  \nMODERNISM TROLLEYBUS\, Photo: Kaunas City Municipality\, 2018 \nFurther Information\nFor Street Art Meets Public Transport in Kaunas see here \nFor any further questions get in contact with Andrijana Filinaité\, Kaunas City Municipal Administration\, Chief specialist of Cultural Heritage Division\, via email \n  \n  \nTrolleybus dedicated to KAUNAS2022\, Photo: Kaunas City Municipality\, 2018

SUMMARY:Biennale Interieur 2018
DESCRIPTION:This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Biennale Interieur and its 26th edition. The first edition in 1968 was entirely rooted in the reigning ideas of that time: challenging tradition\, looking for innovation and taking a stand. Founded in 1967\, the aim of the biennale was to put contemporary design and interior innovations on the map. This would also be shown to the general public and not only to professionals\, as was the custom at other major fairs at the time. Design in the context of interior living was new at a time when ‘design’ was still perceived cold\, elitist and at odds with the idea of ‘comfortable living’. The inception of Biennale Interieur in 1968 could be linked to the motives and ideals behind the student and worker uprisings in the late sixties in France\, Europe and later in the US. The founding members of the Biennale Interieur dreamed of creating a place where the prevailing ideas about what a furniture fair should be were not valid. Whereas other fairs brought a mix of old\, new\, kitsch and design\, the Biennale Interieur resolutely opted for a contemporary and creative form of interior design. The first edition in 1968 was an instant and unexpected success. This alternative approach was continued throughout different levels. In addition to the furniture expo in the Kortrijk Xpo exhibition halls\, a lot of effort was put into the development of a cultural city program and numerous satellite events. Graphic designer Boudewijn Delaere was asked to design the logo. That same simple but striking logo is still used today. Each edition also invited its own a guest of honour. The list of these international names reads like a who’s who in contemporary design: the Italian architect and designer Gio Ponti\, the French architect Jean Prouvé\, the German industrial designer Dieter Rams and the Spanish designer Jaime Hayon are just a few names who adorn the honours list. \nNow\, fifty years later\, the then new idea of combining design with cultural and commercial elements has proven to be a success formula. The ideas from that time have ensured that the Biennale has grown into a standing appointment in the annual design calendar. The 26th edition of the Biennale Interieur brings with it some drastic changes. While up to the previous edition the exhibition lasted for ten days\, the event will run for a more compact five days\, taking a strong substantive approach. Between 18 and 22 October 2018\, INTERIEUR 2018 will again be the place to be in terms of innovation and creativity. The Biennale Interieur is also increasingly aimed at a professional audience. In addition to a strong cultural program including lectures\, exhibitions\, presentations and meeting moments\, a lot of attention is paid to business and entrepreneurship. Interaction and exchange between participants\, trade and professional customers are central for five days. An architecture programme gives national and international architects the opportunity to enjoy a company visit to one of the participating companies in addition to the program in the Xpo. In addition\, the city festival continues to promote the original ideals of the Biennale Interieur. This year\, an empty hospital in the center of the city will be taken over by a young generation of designers\, cultural partners and internationally leading designers. \nFurther information\nBiennale Interieur\nGroeningestraat 37\n8500 Kortrijk\, Belgium\nT: +32 (0)56 22 95 22\ninterieur@interieur.be \nRead on here \nPhoto Gallery\n  \n\n \n \n \n \n Biennale Interieur 2018 \n \n \n \n \n \n Biennale Interieur 2016\, Photo: Frederik Vercruysse
