TEIAS CRIATIVAS (“CREATIVE WARPS”) is an artistic residencies program for national and international designers, taking place at New Hand Lab (NHL), in Covilhã, during 2024 and 2025, through an open call. The artistic work will be inaugurated and exhibited at NHL integrating the program of the Covilhã International Design Triennale, taking place between March and June 2025 in the city. The first line of applications opened on June 22, 2024, with 4 vacancies for design projects. Candidates, subsequently chosen by a jury selected by the organization, will receive an artistic cachet of €2,500 for their creation, and a grant that covers all living expenses [accommodation, food, transport] and creation [materials and equipment]. During the 30 days, those selected will be in residence at the NHL and in Covilhã, located in central Portugal. This first open call is for designers who wish to develop creative work in 4 areas linked to different textile techniques: tufting, weaving, crafts, or clothing. Each designer can compete for one of the 4 lines open for application until July 21, 2024. The artistic projects submitted must be related to the textile industrial heritage and the design concept. The development of the submitted artistic project must focus on approaches to the technique chosen by the designer.
The designer is accompanied by a mentor from the artistic area during the creation of the textile design work, to assist in the use of materials and equipment, the application of techniques, etc. During the residency, the designers will hold a conversation with guests and an artistic activity [e.g. workshop], public and broadcast via streaming. Visits to projects or organizations from various sectors are also planned, with a cultural mediator, connecting the designer in residence with the territory.
